Majid Asgaripour/WANA (West Asia News Agency) via REUTERS The Iranian Foreign Ministry's spokesperson said Tuesday that nuclear issues had not yet been discussed in the latest US-Iran talks that wrapped up on Monday. He said that Tehran had made no new commitments, challenging Washington’s more optimistic description of the negotiations.US Vice President JD Vance said the talks in Switzerland had laid a “good foundation” for a final agreement, but the next phase remains difficult. The talks, mediated by Qatar and Pakistan, are meant to preserve a 60-day window for negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions relief, frozen assets and regional de-escalation.In the Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz is cautiously reopening after weeks of disruption. Ship-tracking data showed that increasing numbers of stranded supertankers have exited the waterway. Oil prices fell as traders bet on improving flows, but insurers and shippers remain wary of mines, damaged ports and congestion. The Lebanon front, meanwhile, remains volatile. Officials said Israeli gunfire killed two people in southern Lebanon, the first reported such fatalities there in three days. Iran’s UN ambassador, Ali Bahreini, warned on Monday that any violation in Lebanon would affect the entire US-Iran process, calling Lebanon an “unquestionable part” of the agreement. Israel says it retains freedom of action against threats from Iran-linked Hezbollah.Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio began a Gulf tour to reassure US allies worried the accord could strengthen Iran and shift the regional balance in Tehran’s favor.US grants Iran oil sanctions waiver as part of dealUS Vice President JD Vance speaks prior to a quadrilateral meeting between the United States, Iran, Pakistan and Qatar at the Burgenstock hotel complex overlooking Lake Lucerne, Switzerland, on June 21, 2026. — URS FLUEELER / AFP via Getty ImagesOn Monday the US Treasury Department issued a two-month waiver allowing Iranian oil and petrochemical sales, including dollar payments to Tehran and blacklisted Iranian entities, following initial US-Iran talks in Switzerland.Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the waiver reflected “productive” negotiations and Iran’s commitments to keep the Strait of Hormuz open and allow inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency. The waiver, valid through Aug. 21, is part of an interim memorandum that sets a 60-day window for nuclear talks.Critics in both parties warn it grants Tehran upfront sanctions relief before nuclear concessions, effectively reopening Iran’s key revenue stream. The emerging US-led framework includes a Lebanon deconfliction mechanism involving Qatar and Pakistan, alongside President Donald Trump’s proposal to draw Syria into efforts against Hezbollah. Israeli officials say they were not consulted on the new mechanism, which gives Iran, Qatar and Pakistan roles in the Lebanese file.Israel has largely observed a ceasefire in southern Lebanon since Sunday as US-Iran talks narrow its options despite Netanyahu’s insistence that military policy remains unchanged.
