We lent our help to Luffy and Bonnie, trying to escape from Egghead, rolling the dice to escape from the five elders. Check out our thoughts!

One Piece: Escape From Egghead is a race against your friends to work with Luffy and Bonnie to escape from the center of Punk Records and beat at least three of the bosses surrounding the island. With simple rules and easy-to-pick-up gameplay, this complicated-looking game will have you quickly speeding through rounds as everyone tries to be the first to Escape From Egghead.
Setup for the game is easy, as well as pretty aesthetically pleasing. Placing Punk Records in the center of the board, you'll lay out three Routes for each of the six paths and a hidden boss at the end of each. Each of the 1-4 players will gather their colored Food Machine board, Food Counter, and Tokens to get ready for the start of play.
Let The Dice Choose Your Path As You Escape From EggheadOn a player's turn, they'll roll three dice; two dice are picked to be the routes from Punk Records that Bonnie and Luffy will travel down, while the third die is the food that you add to your food machine. From there, the game is extremely simple: you move down each of your paths - revealing a Path tile if it's currently hidden - and roll a single die to see if you can meet the number on the Path tile you're on.
If you meet or beat the number, then you can choose to set that tile as a 'save' point for another attempt, or you can proceed to the next path down the line. If you're not able to beat the number on the Path tile, then the character returns to Punk Records, and they can't move any further.
Escape from Egghead gives the players all kinds of ways to alter the roll of a die. With food, they can increase the value of their roll at a 1:1 value; there are allies that can provide you more food or even increase your roll, tokens that let you reroll, and even Nika tokens that let you pick what value you want to have on a die.
Meeting the rolls of a 3 or 4 Path is easy enough, but as you're needing to reach numbers like 7 or 8, or encounter Paths with rules against using food to augment your roll, you'll find yourself in some very fun situations where your stock of 7 food is useless to you, but a Reroll token is worth its weight in gold.
These resources will come to you just as quickly as you can be spending them, so you never have a moment that you're too fearful of using your last reroll or a Nika token to get you that much closer to your goal.
While the game is competitive, there aren't too many things that you can really do to directly influence another player's actions. There are a few ally cards that might let you steal other allies or take away food or rerolls, but for the most part it's really more of a race between three separate lanes to see who can reach the end first.
Escape Three Bosses Is Your Win ConditionAt the end of each pathway is a boss that gets revealed. These are the five Elders of One Piece and Kizaru, the main antagonistic forces that stopped the Straw Hat crew from leaving Egghead. Each has their own win conditions that will have you discarding food, subtracting counts from paths, and even just rolling a certain number of dice in a row, hoping you never get a 1.
It's a fun game to think, "I've already beaten a number of forces to reach this point… just how weird is one of these bosses going to be in order for me to escape from them?"
The win condition of the game is to be the first player to have successfully 'escaped' from three bosses. It gives all players a somewhat 'shared' experience, that being the board state, but when certain bosses can only be escaped from a certain number of times with different parameters, it still ensures that everyone's experience is different.
It wouldn't be a Kess Entertainment One Piece board game without some level of humbling the players, though. With each 'escaped' boss, one of the six Vegapunks are also revealed; once they're all present, a countdown timer begins before all of the players lose. This trigger of six bosses being defeated signaling the end of the game is the perfect klaxxon to everyone playing to say "You better win this soon…" Alternatively, for a player who might have defeated the fewest bosses, this might be the perfect time for them to start to do what little they can with allies and abilities to hinder the player closest to victory for mutually assured destruction.
Single Player Gameplay Puts More Focus On A TimerAdditionally, there is a single-player mode for the game. Just like the multiplayer, you're looking to have Luffy and Bonnie make their way from Punk Records and 'Escape' from three of the bosses. The big change here is that every turn, a Vegapunk is revealed and you gain their boon. On the turn that the seventh Vegapunk has been revealed, if you haven't escaped from a third boss, then you lose the game.
This single-player mode keeps the pressure of the full game while reshaping some of the competitive elements into ways that you can spur your own progress onwards.
As a warm-up before inviting others to play the game with me, it was a really great way to learn just how fun and simple overall the game is, while also providing a LOT of randomness in the way you set up the 18 Paths and 6 Boss cards.
One Piece: Escape From Egghead Review | Final ThoughtsRoom To Grow
I immediately became a fan of the format and how it functioned well as both a multiplayer and single-player experience. While I had a blast playing the game, I also couldn't help but think of the potential of additional Paths and Bosses from other parts of the One Piece Timeline (even if it might be a bit anachronistic) or even how a great format like One Piece: Escape From Egghead could apply to other IP where main characters are attempting to be stopped from a path of escape.
One Piece: Escape From Egghead manages to take a concept and arc from a narrative-heavy property and adapt it into a fun and random board game experience with great success. While it was a bit strange to understand that no individual player was steering Luffy and Bonnie, after only 2-3 rounds each player had completely understood their actions, speeding up play like we'd all been playing Escape From Egghead for years.
The board game experience, even on first play, became less about needing to reaffirm rules and slid into the comfort of knee-jerk reactions to cards being revealed, banter, and strategizing. No one had to be re-explaining rules, so instead we just got to have a fun time.
If you're a fan of One Piece, like games that can be taught quickly, and like a competitive game that doesn't have too much direct antagonism, then you'll likely get a kick out of One Piece: Escape From Egghead. I would definitely be interested to see how this formula could be adapted elsewhere too, or even expanded upon with new Paths and Bosses.
Needless to say, if you're not a fan of One Piece… I'm surprised you're still reading. Go check it out; it will be the best 380+ hours you'll ever spend.
