*NO* Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 "Does Senpai Dream of Electric Toasters?"

Ok!  So...

This one took me a lot of time, effort, and extra careful crafting in how I wanted to arrange, perform, mix, and otherwise put together everything I wanted to do here.

Despite how long the original Persona 3 has been regarded as a gaming classic, I only played and finished the game pretty recently, and the version I played was Persona 3 Reload for the PS5.  From what I'd heard secondhand about it, the game sounded interesting story-wise, but I'd been hesitant to try playing it for a long time.  Mostly because, if I'm being honest, I'm pretty bad at turn-based RPGs, and I have no sense of shame about adjusting difficulty settings if they're there.  And with the P3 Reload remake being as generous as it was with that compared to the original release, I finally gave it a shot.

And by the end of the playthrough, I gotta say, I loved it.

It's hard to describe why without going into loads of important plot details, and I'd rather not do that in this write-up, because as much as you could maybe make a case of spoilers not mattering for a game this old and widely known, I would still hope anyone playing it for their first time would still maybe be going in relatively blind,

Anyway, as for the arrangement itself, the primary source song for most of it is the end credits' vocal song, "Kimi no Kioku".

The lyrics were originally written and sung in Japanese, and while I would definitely not call it a 1-to-1 line-for-line perfect translation, I did still try and balance having lyrics that flowed well in English with still matching the overall message and feel of the original concept (which, if I was I was interpreting correctly, seemed like it was meant to be spoken from the perspective of a particular in-game party member, namely, Aigis)

Lyrics:

In a gentle breeze
With our worries at ease
Rest your weary head in the sunlight

After all the time we spent
As the year came and went
I won't forget all the tenderness in your heart

Close my eyes and pray
(You'll be here to stay)
With the courage that you gave to me
To help me stand and face the world, so maybe

When the dream is gone
(In the new day's dawn)
We may just meet again

Memories
You and me
Sing with open hearts
For all to see

Staring into the open view
Of all we knew as the world came so close to ending
Never backing down, you held your ground
And now the time has come to rest, so lay your head down

Til the end of time
Til the stars align
I'll hold onto my love through all eternity

Closing your eyes toward the sky
I think of all the ways that you always used to live by
Whether you would laugh, or if you would cry
Or if you would smile or if you would just breathe out a deep sigh

When the sun sets
I will not forget
About you until my life is exhausted

In the distant noise
In the crowd with the boys
I hear voices reminding me of you

So I turn around to stare
Thinking you might be there
So you can hear when I tell you 'I love you so'

But I dry my tears
(And I calm my fears)
As I wonder if we'll ever cross our paths together
Somehow, someday, maybe

On the rainy nights
(And the mornings bright)
I will remember you

Memories
Bittersweet
Yet they never fade
They'll forever be...

Shining a light, so warm and bright
Deep in my heart, when I would fight, when I was with you
I would carry on, I would be strong
I would defend until the end, but now I miss you

Long as I recall
I will never fall
Now and forever, I will embrace the feeling

When you would guide me by your side
I would decide to ride or die, go the extra mile
Day after day, month after month,
Time after time, time and again, you would always smile

Even if you're gone
Know it won't be long
Just know that I will never leave you

Staring into the open view
Of all we knew as the world came so close to ending
Never backing down, you held your ground
And now the time has come to rest, so lay your head down

Til the end of time
Til the stars align
I'll hold onto my love through all eternity

Closing your eyes toward the sky
I think of all the ways that you always used to live by
Whether you would laugh, or if you would cry
Or if you would smile or if you would just breathe out a deep sigh

When the sun sets
I will not forget
About you until my life is exhausted

Shining a light, so warm and bright
Deep in my heart, when I would fight, when I was with you
I would carry on, I would be strong
I would defend until the end, but I still miss you

Long as I recall
I will never fall
Now and forever, I will embrace the feeling

When you would guide me by your side
I would decide to ride or die, go the extra mile
Day after day, month after month,
Time after time, time and again, you would always smile

Even though you're gone
Know it won't be long
Just know that I will never leave you

Genre-wise, I drew a lot of inspiration from the musical stylings of older doujin music.  Specifically, I'd been listening to a couple Shin Megami Tensei arrangement albums by Hellion Sounds heavily at the time.  They were mostly focused more on the mainline SMT games, but they did still have some material from the spin-offs, and I thought their rendition of "Battle Hymn of the Soul" (the last boss fight theme of Persona 3) was a pretty great speed metal version of that song.  So I was curious to see if I could manage something similar for "Kimi no Kioku".

I had the overall rhythm of how that idea would sound in my head before sitting down to write it out in a midi draft, but it felt like it'd be missing something if I approached it as just hard speed metal all the way though, so I tried mixing in some softer moments of things like playing around the with the melodies from "Aria of the Soul" (the series' recurring theme for The Velvet Room) for a couple of the guitar leads and the outro part, or the piano intro playing off of some parts from the verses of "Kimi no Kioku".

The Tartarus theme (tartarus0d_01) was also...there, even if in a really small capacity (basically just that one electronic fill around the 4:25 mark)

As for the vocal performance, to be honest, I went in feeling not entirely sure if this was a song in a range I could actually handle that well.  For all I know, that might show for a moment in that one chorus part around 6:23.  Around that chorus, I'll admit, through a mix of feeling pretty intense about the song emotionally in the middle of recording and the song itself being pretty demanding with managing your breathing extra thoroughly to not run out of breath mid-singing, I ran noticeably short of breath on certain parts of it.  At the time, I was considering taking a break and coming back to it later, but in the end, I thought the tone of voice coincidentally lent itself well to the subject matter and feel of the song at that part, so I kept it as a stylistic choice anyway.

So that's that, and like I said, this song hit extremely hard for me on a personal level, but that's not really something I can fully explain without spoiling the story of Persona 3.

Anyway, with any luck, hopefully some of the impact it had for me might come across clearly whether the listener has played the game or not.

(Aigis and various memes about calling her a toaster is also why I named the arrangement title the way I did)
