While I do enjoy experimenting with sounds and treating music like a playground, this was largely just a me and my guitar kind of thing. I mixed and tracked everything in FL Studio.
As for the vibe, my two biggest influences were probably something inbetween Pinegrove and Johnny Goth.
This song was originally only found during the girl route of Persona 3 Portable, a route exclusive to this version of Persona 3. A remix was later added to the rhythm game Persona 3: Dancing Moonlight, but I made the conscious decision to not incorporate any ideas from that remix into this arrangement, as the remix is quite energetic and I was hoping to achieve a more somber tone.
A lot of the Persona 3 soundtrack has this sort of positive energy about it, which manages to play pretty harmoniously with the bleak, hopeless tone that the story itself provides.
Even so, I wanted to take a Persona 3 song and make it sound as bleak as the game feels. Just to see how it feels. I could have taken any song, really, but I have an inexplicable mental association that ties character Fuuka Yamagishi with this track in particular. Fuuka being one of my favourite characters means, by this arbitrary corollary, Time ends up being one of my favourite songs, as well.
The first big change is that the entire song is transposed about four semitones above the original. This didn't start as a deliberate decision; I simply had a capo on my guitar when I picked it up to record this and wanted to hear what the chords sounded like transposed like that. And, as the saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. So I wrote and recorded the rest of the cover around chords that were 4 semitones above the original to match. In my opinion, it somehow aids in the more somber tone.
The opening three note piano flourish at the very beginning (literally debuting around the 0:01 mark), and repeated after every chorus, I chose to replace with a voice. While it would have been really easy to either record or track a piano flourish just like in the original, I often try to write songs that could be performed on a stage with as little downtime for each band member as possible, and adding a piano to the rest of the song kind of ruined the vibe I was going for, so it felt silly to have three piano notes in these few sections only to have the hypothetical piano player just standing there and dancing in place for the other parts of the song. Seeing as how no one was singing yet, the vocals were free to do anything they wanted. And something about a short little chant felt kind of chilling, in just the way I was hoping to achieve.
The chords around the prechorus (0:36, "... you need to fill in") don't match the original's rhythm 1:1. I made them more rigid to match the folk guitar sound I was going for. The original actually uses two guitars mixed wildly different from eachother and both of them seem to dance around a little bit more during this section. For my purposes, I was not trying to make anything anyone could dance to.
The bassline during the chorus is, as far as I know, completely original. Inspiration's a tricky thing and we can't always tell where we're pulling from, but to put it as literally as I can, I didn't intentionally base it off of anything. It was rule of cool 100%.
Since the original is meant to loop indefinitely, it doesn't really have a solo or an outro, so I decided to not necessarily do those things either. My version does end, but it makes no particular fanfare about it. The drums drop out and the last thing you hear is the little vocal chant fading out.
