Rare boat trip: Head ‘Round the Island' and soak up all sides of Catalina

CATALINA ISLAND… is famous for so many legendary things, from the Casino Building, where people have been whooping it up for nearly a century, to those famous hill-roaming bison, to the presence of well-known Catalina mavens like author Zane Grey. The flying fish, those splashy stars of summertime, also have their fans, as does the quirky Catalina Wine Mixer, a beachy romp inspired by the 2008 comedy “Step Brothers” (people do indeed wear their argyle sweaters to the bash). But even if you’ve done or seen or soaked it all in and tried every seafood delicacy and tropical drink served around Avalon, and sipped a cool Buffalo Milk in Two Harbors, you may have never viewed every angle of the island from a boat. But if you’ve dreamed of sailing ‘Round the Island, don your maritime cap and make for Catalina: The island-circling adventure is heading out May 20.
THE FUNDRAISER, which is held in support of the Catalina Museum of Art & History, will feature naturalist Alexandra Brainerd and scuba diver and ocean expert Jon Council at the informative lead. You’ll set out from Avalon Harbor in the late morning — do check in by 11:30 a.m. — with a return time of 3:30 p.m., give or take. Along the way, you’ll bask in “… hidden shipwrecks, vibrant marine life, and untold stories,” and the awesome opportunity to “… experience Catalina from a perspective few ever do.” A single ticket is $200, while the price for a pair of travelers enjoying the boat together is $350. And, for sure: This is a midday ocean escapade, so a boxed lunch will be provided with your ticket price. For all the details, say “aye captain” and set sail to this site to book your spot.
