BEFORE A HIKE, there is another hike of sorts: Getting to the trail’s starting point, to the place where your adventure will truly and beautifully begin. How you reach the trail you have in mind, however, can sometimes be a bit complex or frustrating, especially if you’d like to leave your car or bike behind and focus solely on strutting into the wilderness. And if that wilderness is, for you, a magnificent mountain landscape that is lush with tall pines, birdsong, and bright skies, you’ve probably been itching for the opportunity to hoof it near Big Bear. Here’s some sweet news as summer revs up: The new Trolley to Trails service, presented by Mountain Transit, is running around the lake, with a focus on helping hikers in the area reach and depart various trails. An added bonus? The trolley lightens the traffic load around the popular lake.
RIDE FOR FREE: No payment is necessary to board the trolley, but you will want to check out the map. The route begins in the Village, and there are more than a few stops around Big Bear Lake, including Towne Trail at Snow Summit, Stanfield Marsh Boardwalk, the Nature Discovery Trail, and Castle Rock Trail. “There were several reasons we thought this made sense, and in the first month we have had over 400 riders, which is a good start for the new route,” said Mountain Transit General Manager Sandy Benson. The service is available Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, as well as holiday Mondays, and is expected to run through October. Do note the trolley hours before pinging your hike buddies to book an outing: The service begins at 8:30 a.m. and concludes at 4:25 p.m., well before sunset. You say you simply want to see the lake and views and skip the hike? Sightseers are welcome to ride, too; find out more at the Trolley to Trails page now.
