Samsung SDS is partnering with Samsung C&T to develop a modular artificial intelligence data center (AIDC) in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province.

According to industry sources on July 6, Samsung C&T has applied for a construction permit to build an AI data center on a 37,475-square-meter site adjacent to Samsung SDS' existing data center in Chiljeon-dong, Chuncheon. Samsung C&T will be responsible for construction, while Samsung SDS will operate the facility. Samsung SDS has operated a data center at the site since 2019, and the new AIDC will utilize idle land within the existing campus.

Earlier this month, Samsung C&T was found to be recruiting on-site construction management personnel for the project. With employment contracts set for 18 months, construction is expected to begin this summer, with completion targeted for next fall. The companies are also reportedly considering deploying NVIDIA's latest Blackwell graphics processing units (GPUs).

The initial phase of the new AIDC is expected to have a capacity of approximately 2.4 megawatts (MW), with additional capacity to be added as demand grows. Because the facility will use a modular design, it can be expanded more easily, allowing flexible responses to changing market conditions.

Samsung SDS is currently participating in a consortium with Naver Cloud, Samsung C&T, Samsung Electronics, Kakao and KT to build the National AI Computing Center in Haenam, South Jeolla Province. The project, with a total investment of approximately 2.5 trillion won, is scheduled for completion and opening in October 2028. Industry observers believe the Chuncheon project reflects Samsung SDS' strategy of establishing another AIDC hub in the Gangwon region to meet rapidly growing demand for AI data center capacity.

A Samsung SDS spokesperson said the Chuncheon data center is being pursued as a pilot project with Samsung C&T and that no details beyond the construction permit application have been finalized.
