Samsung Electronics has cut hundreds of jobs, affecting U.S. workers in the states of New Jersey and Texas, with some being offered relocations, according to a Reuters report citing documents and anonymous sources.

The layoffs were not attributed to AI, as the South Korean giant informed Reuters that Samsung Electronics America was moving its headquarters to Texas.

Over the weekend, Samsung confirmed that 739 roles in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey were affected. Around 100 workers in the mobile division at Plano, Texas, were also laid off, the report said.

As per a statement from the company, there was no global restructuring affecting Samsung’s consumer product business.

While Samsung’s business was heavily boosted by soaring AI chip demand and heavy investments in chip plants, other parts of its business — such as consumer electronics — have been negatively impacted by the same set of factors.

Samsung had earlier flagged that it could post a 19-fold rise in its second-quarter profit, according to Reuters.

However, Counterpoint Research noted in a recent report that rising memory prices had led to higher smartphone prices. In particular, India’s mass-market mobile segment (the sub-₹15k segment) was hit the hardest, seeing shipments declining 45% year-over-year (YoY), per the report.

With regards to India’s smartphone market in Q2 2026, Samsung ranked second with a share of 17.6%, growing 2% YoY, according to the firm.

Other global technology companies that have carried out layoffs in recent weeks include Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon, with leaders and analysts pointing to a variety of causes apart from AI alone.
