Greg James screamed with joy as he learned he has raised £2.8million for his Comic Relief bike challenge - just miles from the finish line in Edinburgh

The Radio 1 Breakfast DJ, 40, is cycling 1000km in eight days on a tandem bicycle, and has been surprised by family and friends along the way, including Prince William earlier this week.

Greg set off from Galashiels in the Scottish Borders on Friday morning for his final day of cycling and started the day with a total amount raised of £2.5million.

Just over an hour later, Greg took a break from cycling for a pit stop in North Middleton, Midlothian - just 16 miles from his final destination of Edinburgh.

During the pit stop, Greg spoke to radio host Matt Edmonson, who revealed the total money he has raised had jumped up to £2,823,694.

'2.8 million!! YESSS!' Greg screamed, before adding: 'Wow. We're really moving! It is stupid now. But that's fun. Silly things are fun aren't they?

'Let's keep doing this silly thing and let's get it up to three. Do it for Arthur. Do it for Arthur and his big seat.'

At the beginning of the clip, Greg said: 'I've asked for a silly total yo hand over to Comic Relief at the end of today. What are we on right now? Let's go.'

'Okay so when we last had a total it was £2.5million, which is crazy,' Matt said.

Matt then added: 'We've only been on air for an hour and eight minutes. So let's find out what the new total is...'

Greg screamed with joy with joy at the total reveal of £2.8million before preparing to finish the route.

On Thursday, Greg broke down in tears as he was reunited with his loved ones after admitting he was feeling 'rotten' on the seventh day of his gruelling Comic Relief bike challenge.

As Greg prepared to start the next day of his trek, which would take him up to the Scottish border, he confessed he was starting to feel its impact.

The presenter broke down as he embraced his sister and niece who had joined him for the latest leg of the challenge on Thursday.

Earlier this week Greg revealed he's been 'masking his emotions' after sharing his father Alan had a stroke just days before he was due to start his bike ride, meaning his parents were unable to join him.

But with the help of pal Jamie Laing, Greg completed the latest leg of the ride, and learned by the end of the day his fundraising total had reached £2.4 million.

'2.8 million!! YESSS!' Greg screamed, before adding: 'Wow. We're really moving! It is stupid now. But that's fun. Silly things are fun aren't they?'

Greg was even visited by Prince William during his challenge

Speaking on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show, Greg shared that it was the support of his family and his wife Bella that was helping him through the bike challenge.

He said: 'I wanted to let everyone in a bit on what my village is, what the thing is that gets me through, and that's and that's Bella, and that is, that's my lovely amazing dog.

'And that's my Mum and Dad, and that's my sister, and that's my niece and my nephew and all my best friends, and everyone at Radio 1.

'And it's all the people that support me every single day. And it's the breakfast team, they sent me a selfie this morning and I started crying because I saw them in the studio and I was like "I miss those guys" because we pick each other up every day.

'So that's that's my village, and I'm lucky, I'm so lucky to have that. I'm so lucky to have those people, and they, and that's why I've been smiling on that bike, even though I've not wanted to do it, because I've had all those people in my head that really look after me when I need it.

'And there are lots of people that don't have those people when they need it, and I feel terrible about that.

'So that's why I wanted to do this, and that's why I'm going to complete it.

'But I am feeling rotten today. But we can, we can go again.'

Greg was then surprised by his sister Catherine and his niece in the studio, and broke down as he embraced them.

On Thursday, Greg broke down in tears as he was reunited with his loved ones after admitting he was feeling 'rotten' on the seventh day of his gruelling Comic Relief bike challenge

As Greg continued his mammoth journey north, by the end of the day he was just 75 miles from his final destination of Edinburgh, setting the stage for the last leg during the Comic Relief telethon on Friday.

With donations pouring in throughout the week, the radio star was thrilled when he learned his total raised so far had reached £2,413,981.

While Greg has been supported by many of his famous pals and loved ones on the trek, Jamie Laing caused quite the scene when he joined him on the tandem on Thursday.

Greg supported him on his endurance challenge back then where he wore a wedding dress to run alongside him, and this week Jamie, 37, repaid the favour - albeit in a slightly more racy outfit.

He hopped on the back of the tandem bike in the skimpy outfit, before filming some hilarious dancing videos together for socials.

Greg had previously told Jamie that he'd join him in his challenge in a wedding gown if donations exceeded £450,000, with fans smashing that total with ease.

The wedding dress was also in honour of Greg's now wife Bella who proposed to him ahead of his own Gregathlon challenge for Sport Relief back in 2018.
