Dan Walker has reflected on his near-death bike crash and told how he is 'really thankful' that he is still alive after the terrifying incident.

The newsreader, 46, spoke to his friend Helen Skelton about the scary crash as they headed on a road trip for their show Dan and Helen's Pennine Adventure.

Dan poignantly admitted that the near-death experience 'reset' his priorities in life as he told how he was thrown from his bicycle during the crash in Sheffield.

He was struck by a driver while riding a bicycle near his family home in February, and has previously told how he has 'no memory' of the crash.

Giving an insight into the terrifying crash in a teaser for the show, Dan told how the car stopped just 50cm away from his head, admitting he is 'thankful' to still be alive.

He said: 'I was in Sheffield town centre, I can remember getting to the roundabout, I looked to my righthand side, I saw there was a gap and I went into the gap.

'All I know is I got hit by a car and obviously I smashed my face up a bit, I landed really heavily on my hip.

'The car stopped eventually about 50cm away from my head, so you can't not think about potentially what could have happened, can you?

'That's why I just feel really thankful that I'm still here, but since then, I've not thought about it.'

Helen, 40, told him: 'It would be perfectly normal and perfectly acceptable to be a bit shaken by that.'

To which Dan added: 'It does make you think about things you might not have said to somebody or things you want to do.

'It resets your priorities and think what are the important things, and what do I really care about.'

Last month, Dan told how he still battles with daily health struggles after his near-death bike crash.

The former BBC Breakfast star said he continues to feel the impact of his accident on a day-to-day basis and struggles to get out of his car due to his nerve damage.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, he said: 'I landed on my right hip really, really heavily and I jolted my back a bit, so I've got nerve damage down the right side of my body.

'Every time I get out of a car, it takes me about two minutes to get my legs kicking into gear.'
