This article examines the family organization of the rural population of Sverdlovsk Oblast in the mid-twentieth century, at a turning point in the second demographic transition. The aims of the study are to reconstruct the size, types, and sociodemographic characteristics of rural families based on primary forms from the 1959 All-Union Population Census and to identify how the census materials reflect the later stages of the demographic transition and the consequences of preceding social upheavals. The article refers to the rural family of the Middle Urals as the basic unit of demographic, economic, and socio-cultural processes, intergenerational ties, and communications. The relevance and novelty of the research are determined by its use of primary materials from the 1959 census, which are rarely employed as a basis for the analysis of family structure because they were destroyed after the expiration of their temporary storage period. For the first time, the authors introduce a corpus of survey forms from three rural districts of Sverdlovsk Oblast (Baikalovo, Revda, and Pervouralsk) kept in the State Archive of Sverdlovsk Oblast into scholarly circulation. The resulting analytical database includes descriptions of 1,670 families (0.7–0.8 % of the total rural families in the region) and contains not only their quantitative characteristics (number of members, children, workers, and dependents) but also qualitative parameters: sex-age and functionalrole structure, household type, and the pattern of joint or separate residence. In addition to the questionnaires, the source base also comprises the published results of the 1959 census for Sverdlovsk Oblast. In interpreting the census results and analysing the family structure of the rural population of the oblast, the authors draw on the concept of the demographic transition and theoretical developments in modern historical demography and family sociology; methods of structural-typological and comparative analysis of families are also used to identify district-specific patterns. The distribution of families by number of members, children, workers, and dependents is analysed, as is the typology of households (single, nuclear, extended, and separated), the age and marital status of heads of families, and the social profile of rural households. Particular attention is paid to widowed and separated families as manifestations of the ‘demographic echo’ of the war and migration processes. The article documents a shift in family structure toward small and low-fertility households, gradual nuclearization, and an increase in the proportion of one-parent families and single-person households, which generally corresponds to the logic of the demographic transition.
