Lane closures north of downtown Seattle lead the parade of construction that will force thousands of drivers to detour or change plans.
Northbound Interstate 5 will be a tough place to drive this weekend, while the Washington State Department of Transportation crams four jobs together north of downtown Seattle.
The state has shifted its roadwork into overdrive this fall for many reasons, among them the loss of work days during summer’s World Cup. Stepping back into history, the Legislature let critical I-5 maintenance lapse into the mid-2020s instead of the 2010s, as its growing tax stream flowed into a deep-bore Seattle tunnel, new Highway 520 floating bridge and suburban toll lanes. Drivers now pay the price in time, as they crawl toward I-5 work zones.
However, the Eastside is being spared another I-405 weekend shutdown from Renton to Bellevue, as contractors prepare for construction to resume in a couple of weeks, project spokesperson Craig Smiley said.
Weekend lane reductions ahead
Seattle highways near the Ship Canal will be hardest-hit by roadwork this weekend, along with traffic disruptions in Tukwila, Kirkland and downtown Seattle.
(1.) I-5 express lanes to north Seattle: Closed from 11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, until 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5.
(2.) Eastbound Highway 520 from I-5 to Montlake Boulevard: Closed from 11 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday.
(3.) Highway 99 Aurora Bridge: Southbound lanes closed for routine inspections from 5 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Northbound lane reductions on Sunday from 5 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
(4.) I-405/Northeast 85th Street interchange in Kirkland: Closed from 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday.
(5.) Southbound I-405 in Tukwila: Up to two lanes closed from 7 p.m. Saturday to 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
(6.) Highway 99 tunnel: Closed in both directions from 10 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Saturday.
The I-5 express lanes to north Seattle, which point northbound this year, close from 11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, until 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5, as crews replace drains on the underside of the Ship Canal Bridge.
That job, the worst of what WSDOT calls “overlapping closures,” will compound chronic slowdowns on the northbound Ship Canal Bridge deck, where two northbound lanes are being resurfaced until December.
And if drivers get that far, they can’t exit onto eastbound Highway 520 from I-5 to Montlake Boulevard, closed from 11 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday, as crews prepare to remove an old 520 offramp and some viaduct spans. A new concrete bridge will be built over Portage Bay.
Meanwhile, two lanes on the Highway 99 Aurora Bridge will be closed for routine inspections southbound from 5 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, switching to northbound reductions Sunday from 5 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Asked why schedule those while nearby I-5 express lanes close, WSDOT spokesperson Tom Pearce said, “looking at traffic flows, we think it’s manageable,” since the Aurora disruptions take only a few hours each.
A Seahawks afternoon game Sunday will bring more traffic into Seattle. Football-day Sounder trains are increasing to three in the south and two in the north for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers. The S Line leaves Lakewood at 9:51 a.m., skipping stops north of Puyallup. The second train leaves Sumner at 10:43 a.m., and the third leaves Lakewood at 10:26 a.m., hitting all stations. On the N Line, trains leave at 10:20 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. More info at soundtransit.org/seahawks.
On the Eastside, the I-405/Northeast 85th Street interchange in Kirkland will close from 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday, for paving on 85th.
People going from the Eastside to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport should beware of work on southbound I-405 in Tukwila, which loses up to two lanes from 7 p.m. Saturday to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, for paving.
Routine overnight maintenance will close the Highway 99 tunnel under downtown Seattle in both directions, from 10 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Saturday.
Out near the Pacific coast, emergency repairs have closed the Highway 101 Hoh River Bridge between Forks and Queets until noon Oct. 6, where “travelers will need to prepare for hours-long detours,” along Hood Canal, says WSDOT. Engineers found cracks in a beam and steel bridge members, limiting the bridge to 25 mph and single-lane travel since mid-July. Another 5 ½-day shutdown is scheduled next week.
