People who rely on the Edmonds-Kingston ferry will need to cross Puget Sound some other way Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning, because railway maintenance will block access to the Edmonds dock.

The last Washington State Ferries trips Tuesday will leave Kingston at 6:10 p.m. and Edmonds at 7 p.m. The final five night sailings each direction are canceled.

Then on Wednesday morning, service doesn’t resume until 9:35 a.m. from Kingston and 10:20 a.m. from Edmonds, assuming the trackwork ends as scheduled, a rider alert said. The first six morning sailings each direction are canceled.

Travelers are encouraged to walk onto Kitsap Transit passenger ferries from Kingston to Seattle, a 40-minute trip. Crew will be added so those boats can carry the vessel’s full capacity of 295 passengers. More people than usual are expected for Wednesday morning commute trips into Seattle at 5:25 a.m., 7:05 a.m. and 8:45 a.m.

BNSF Railway owns the tracks across Main Street in downtown Edmonds, traveled by most of the route’s 3.7 million drivers, passengers and walk-on riders per year. Freight trains, Amtrak, and Sounder commuter rail share this right of way.

However, Sounder’s N Line between Everett, Mukilteo, Edmonds and Seattle will operate as usual despite the railwork, Sound Transit spokesperson David Jackson said. Amtrak hasn’t announced any disruption at Edmonds, as of Friday afternoon.

WSF examined a detour option going from West Dayton Street to Railroad Avenue, between the Edmonds marina and the railway, but determined a tight turn at Railroad Avenue would cause “some real chokepoints” when incoming and outgoing traffic converge, mixed with pedestrians, and it’s too tight for long vehicles, said WSF spokesperson Kurt Workman.
