Dolly Parton has been a looong-time LGBTQ ally with a truly unbelievable record for supporting the gays, etc.
Here are some of her most iconic quotes about the community:
1.
She famously said, "If you’re gay, you’re gay. If you’re straight, you’re straight. And you should be allowed to be how you are and who you are."
2.
In 2005, Dolly wrote a song called "Travelin' Thru" for the movie Transamerica and said her motivation for writing the song was to change minds, "Some people are blind or ignorant, and you can't be that prejudiced and hateful and go through this world and still be happy. One thing about this movie is that I think art can change minds. It's alright to be who you are."
3.
In 2011, she personally apologized to a gay couple who were asked to turn their marriage equality shirt inside out at Dollywood. She gave the couple a refund and a personal note that said, "Everyone knows my personal support of the gay and lesbian community. Dollywood is a family park and all families are welcome."
4.
In 2016, she spoke out on the North Carolina bathroom bill — a law declaring that people had to use the bathroom associated with the sex on their birth certificate — saying, "I think everybody should be treated with respect. I don’t judge people, and I try not to get too caught up in the controversy of things. I hope that everybody gets a chance to be who and what they are. I just know if I have to pee, I’m going to pee. I don’t care where it’s going to be."
5.
In 2014, she explained why she had such a large gay following, telling Billboard: "They know that I completely love and accept them, as I do all people. I’ve struggled enough in my life to be appreciated and understood. I’ve had to go against all kinds of people through the years just to be myself. I think everybody should be allowed to be who they are, and to love who they love. I don’t think we should be judgmental. Lord, I’ve got enough problems of my own to pass judgment on somebody else."
6.
She has literally said she's pretty much a drag queen:
7.
In fact, she said her drag name would be "P. Titty."
8.
In 2014, she told Pride Source, "I am not gay, but if I were I would be the first one running out of the closet."
9.
In 2014, she also spoke out in support of marriage equality, saying, "I don’t want to be controversial or stir up a bunch of trouble but people are going to love who they are going to love. I think gay couples should be allowed to marry. They should suffer just like us heterosexuals. Ha ha ha!"
10.
In 2023, she spoke out about laws in Tennessee that legalized discrimination against trans people, telling the Hollywood Reporter: "I just want everybody to be treated good. I try not to get into the politics of everything. I try to get into the human element of it. I have some of everybody in my own immediate family and in my circle of employees. I’ve got transgender people. I’ve got gays. I’ve got lesbians. I’ve got drunks. I’ve got drug addicts — all within my own family. I know and love them all, and I do not judge."
11.
And lastly, in 2024, she told Absolute Radio Country, "I love and care about people for who they are and for who they are to me. And believe me, like I say in my own immediate family, and my circle of employees: I've got gays, I've got lesbians, I've got drag queens, I've got transgenders, some of everything in my own family," she said. "I just enjoy people for who and what they are."
