Nine inches of rain fell in New Richland, Minn., this past weekend, flooding an estimated 80% of homes in the rural city of 1,200. Although no injuries have been reported, the damage is extensive, and 36 residents were evacuated from a care center with the help of firefighters and the town’s high school football team.

An investigation into Mayor Kaohly Her’s recent conduct concluded her behavior was “offensive” and “inappropriate” in communications with city employees, but did not cross into the realm of sexual harassment. This follows on a sexual harassment complaint filed by Police Chief Axel Henry. Her issued a formal apology in response to the findings.

With nearly half of Minnesota families with young children unable to afford diapers, the state government has put $1.1 million of public funds towards the Diaper Distribution Grant Program over the last two years. Five years ago, the program distributed 610,441 diapers, but this year, they expect to provide more than 4 million. 

Schools on the Iron Range are facing funding trouble, and that has led to collaboration and consolidation between districts. Four years ago, Virginia and Eveleth-Gilbert combined and created Rock Ridge, and the new Rock Ridge High School has facilities neither district could sustain on their own. But there are concerns around the region that communities could lose some of the identity that has defined them.
