The annual lost property sale, hosted by Nexus at the popular Tynemouth Metro Station Market, gives forgotten belongings a second chance while raising valuable funds for good causes across the North East.

Every year, Nexus collects hundreds of items left on trains, stations and bus interchanges. While owners have 28 days to reclaim their possessions, many are never reunited with them. Rather than sending everything to landfill, suitable items are recycled or sold, helping support local charities.

This year’s beneficiary is Dementia North East, a Sunderland-based charity dedicated to improving the lives of people living with dementia and supporting their families and carers. The organisation provides practical advice, emotional support and community services that help people maintain independence and reduce isolation following a diagnosis. Every pound raised will contribute towards continuing this vital work across the region.

Visitors to the market can expect an eclectic mix of bargains, including brand-new clothing with tags still attached, sports equipment such as boxing gloves and badminton racquets, umbrellas, windbreakers and plenty of unusual curiosities that make the sale a talking point every year.

The initiative has an impressive fundraising history. Last year alone, the sale generated almost £7,000 for James’ Place, a charity providing life-saving support for men experiencing suicidal crisis. Through centres in Newcastle and Liverpool, James’ Place offers free, professional therapy aimed at preventing suicide and giving men hope during their darkest moments.

In previous years, proceeds have also benefited Feeding Families, which provides emergency food parcels and essential household items to families facing hardship across the North East.

The annual Metro lost property sale proves that even the most unexpected forgotten belongings can make a meaningful difference, transforming abandoned possessions into essential funding for charities that support thousands of people across the North East every year.
