It’s National Stop Snoring Week 2026, so we are taking a closer look at the impact snoring it can have on both health and relationships.

For many people, the most obvious issue is the noise. Snoring can be irritating, disruptive, and a nightly source of frustration for anyone sharing a bed. But beyond the annoyance, it can lead to chronic sleep deprivation for partners.

The volume of snoring is a key factor. Sleep disruption can begin at around 40 decibels, while snoring often reaches between 50 and over 100 decibels, comparable to heavy traffic or even a power tool. According to the World Health Organisation, prolonged exposure to noise at these levels can negatively affect multiple aspects of health.

These effects go far beyond tiredness. Ongoing sleep disturbance has been linked to reduced cognitive performance, mental health challenges, and impaired daytime functioning. It can also interfere with vital body systems, including hormone regulation, blood sugar control, and cardiovascular health.

Snoring is also widely recognised as one of the most difficult sounds to ignore. Even if a partner appears to “sleep through it,” the quality of that sleep is often significantly reduced. Deep, restorative sleep becomes lighter and more fragmented, and important REM (dream) sleep can be disrupted.

Over time, some partners resort to sleeping in a separate room just to get a few hours of uninterrupted rest. While this can provide short-term relief, it often brings feelings of guilt or strain within the relationship. The long-term impact can affect both emotional wellbeing and overall relationship health.

So, what can be done?

The first step is acknowledging that snoring is not just a minor inconvenience, it’s a health issue that deserves attention. Left untreated, it is unlikely to improve and may worsen over time.

There are various self-help approaches available, from lifestyle changes to anti-snoring aids. However, if these don’t resolve the issue, it’s important to seek professional advice. Identifying the underlying cause is key to finding an effective, long-term solution.

Ultimately, everyone deserves a good night’s sleep and addressing snoring is a crucial step towards achieving it. For advice on how to stop snoring, visit the NHS website.
