Tyler Guyton wins Dallas Cowboys starting left tackle job in training camp

The Dallas Cowboys have completed four total practices, two days padded; the left tackle position was decided after day one in pads.
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer said that Tyler Guyton won the position. His teammate on the left side of the offensive line, All-Pro Guard Tyler Smith, is proud of him.
“I mean, I think it was all-inclusive; I think it was dieting; I think it was recovery. I think it was the way he trained, like cross-training. All those different things. I think, you know, it was more than just, you know, maybe I’ll eat better during the week or more than just, okay, maybe I’ll stretch before I go to bed. Like, I really think, you know, he took a step back and, like, saw what he needs to get better at. He truly attacked that on all fronts,” Smith said.
Schottenheimer explained the quick decision after saying last week that it would be an open competition.
“We have the right to adjust some things, and so we’re going to keep him at starting left tackle right now. We talked to Nate and said, Nate needs to show us a little bit more consistent play to push for that. And so I know we had told you guys about the rotation. So Tyler (Guyton) will stay at left tackle. Excited to see how Nate handles that challenge. But Tyler (Guyton)’s playing really, really well,” Schottenheimer said.
All 11 Cowboys offensive starters returned from last year.
“I think he’s doing some really great things,” Schottenheimer said. “I think his sets are very compact; he’s in control, he’s not oversetting. He’s playing the leverage game; his punches have been good, but I don’t think that’s anything new to the [full] pads. I think that started with him being one of the first guys back in the building. I think February, whatever I saw him, he was an offseason award winner.”
Guyton was drafted 29th in the 2024 draft; he’s missed nine games in two seasons.
Backup Nate Thomas started four games in his place last year; Smith started the final four games of the season with Guyton out with injury.
Guyton primarily played right tackle at the University of Oklahoma.
Guyton was limited in Tuesday’s practice with a sore elbow, so Thomas got the majority of first-team snaps in team drills.
Smith wasn’t too keen on changing positions unless some contract restructuring would happen.
With good reasons: Smith is considered one of the top guards in the NFL, and based on how difficult the NFC East defensive tackles are, the Cowboys need him up front.
If you’re wondering, Smith hasn’t had any reps at tackle. That’s been reserved for Guyton, who for now is the leader at left tackle.
“I mean, I think we’ve got to stay ready for anything. But I’ll just say this: I have the utmost confidence in Tyler. I mean, not everybody sees it, but we work together in the summer, we work in the off-season. The body of work he’s put forward, I feel like, is gonna pay dividends and people are gonna truly see who he is,” Smith said.

Cowboys injury update
Dallas Cowboys tight end Princeton Fant left practice early after apparently suffering a knee injury Monday.
Fant took a knee-on-knee hit to his left leg after being blocked backward into running back Israel Abanikanda during a team period as the Cowboys were in full pads for the first time in training camp. Fant stayed down for several minutes before being helped to the trainers’ tent without being able to put weight on his leg. He was then taken off the field on a cart.
Signed as an undrafted free agent out of Tennessee in 2023, Fant has appeared in 11 games over three seasons, playing mostly on special teams and making two tackles. He is the cousin of New Orleans Saints tight end Noah Fant.
It is the first significant on-field injury for the Cowboys since opening camp on Wednesday.
Safeties P.J. Locke (hyperextended knee) and Jalen Thompson (hip flexor) have missed several days of practice, but head coach Brian Schottenheimer expects both back soon. Cornerback Zion Childress (hamstring) has also been out, and Schottenheimer said his recovery is “probably going to be a little bit longer” than the other injured defensive backs.
One final Cowboys note: second-year defensive end Donovan Ezeiruaku was kicked out of practice for throwing a punch. Schottenheimer said if you throw a punch in a game, you’re getting ejected, so the same rule applies in practice.
