Former Cowboy talks offensive struggles, defensive standouts at joint practice with LA Rams

Former NFL player and current Emmy Award-winning NFL analyst, Isaiah Stanback, spoke with NBC 5’s Newy Scruggs about the Dallas Cowboys’ first training camp practice with the Los Angeles Rams in Woodland Hills, CA.
Stanback said the Cowboys offense struggled with one of the league’s better defenses, even without Myles Garrett (or potentially Aaron Donald).
“Offense started off a little bit slow. Our offensive line didn’t get a good push. The defensive line and the Rams were winning the majority of the downs, but later on they started picking it up. They started getting a little bit of motion up front. Started getting some passes across the formation. CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, Ryan Flournoy got some big plays. They started winning today. So I think at the end of the day, it probably ended up relatively even, but a little too much pressure in the backfield for me,” Stanbeck said. “You did not see too many explosive plays because they have some relatively good corners, but also you have to understand that in these joint practice sessions, you don’t want to empty the bag out too much, right? You want to keep your good stuff in your pocket; you’re running your base offense, keeping it very vanilla.”
Tyler Guyton removed himself from the joint practice, saying he was tired. Three-time Super Bowl champion and former Dallas Cowboys player Nate Newton expressed some frustration about that. Stanback agreed.
“I don’t disagree with Mr. Nate. There are some concerns up front. When it comes to Tyler Guidon in particular, it’s never about the physical for me. I know he’s been out because of injury, but I think the majority of his battle is mental. And unfortunately, you saw some of that kind of show back up today, and the bad part for him is that wasn’t against Mr. Myles Garrett,” Stanback said.
Guyton is expected to start at left tackle again this season, but he’s faced competition from Nate Thomas and Tyler Smith.
Cowboys reserve linebacker Justin Barron was the day’s standout performer, intercepting Rams starting quarterback Matthew Stafford, who has won a Super Bowl and is from Highland Park, once and backup Stetson Bennett twice. Stanback was impressed.
“He’s been relatively quiet throughout training camp. But, you know, a lot of the emphasis in terms of their analysis is going to be placed on today’s practice against the Rams. So going out there getting three picks against two quarterbacks (Matthew Stafford), the starter, one of the best in the league, and then the backup. It’s not a bad showing for him. And hopefully that continues for him throughout the rest of the preseason,” Stanback said.
First-round pick Caleb Downs continues to impress players, coaches, and media alike.
“Defense was running around; I think Caleb Downs, he continues to show up. He’s consistent, man. I know that’s the big flashy name, but the reality is he earns it, and he proves it; he stays out to practice every single day and works on it. Lane fits her sound. He’s very intentional about everything that he does, and because of that other guys are able to play off of him and it makes the team better,” Stanbeck said.
Cowboys backup running back Jaydon Blue fumbled during 11-on-11 practice.
“Yeah, he has to figure that out. Obviously that’s been something that’s held him back. He’s talked about his mental struggles as well, his maturity, but the fumbles were the issue coming out of Texas, and then he showed his ugly head again,” Stanback said.
Stanback joined NFL Network in 2024; he played for the Cowboys, New England Patriots, and New York Giants, where he won a Super Bowl in 2012. He currently lives in Dallas.
