Cowboys' Ryan Flournoy talks expectations after elevating from fringe receiver

The Dallas Cowboys are returning one of the most successful passing attacks from 2025. While the headliners remain Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and George Pickens, Ryan Flournoy has a firm grip on the third receiver spot.
NBC 5’s Pat Doney sat down with Flournoy at camp to talk about living up to huge expectations, coming into his first season as someone expected to make regular contributions in the passing game.
“Yeah, I’m honestly grateful. I’m not satisfied, but I’m super grateful for the journey I’ve been through,” Flournoy said. “Just how much I’ve grown and just how much I learned from football. I’m learning every single day from Dak, from CeeDee, from G(eorge) P(ickens), and just all the guys. And it’s wonderful to be in that room, in that conversation with those guys.”
Flournoy barely played as a rookie; he played 16 games last season, catching 40 passes for more than 400 yards. Flournoy played five seasons of college football between Central Missouri, Iowa Western Community College, and then Southeast Missouri State. The sixth-round pick in 2024 said he’s always dreamed of playing in the NFL, even when others did not believe it possible for him.
“Yeah, I always wanted to play in the NFL. I always knew I would play in the NFL. And just not giving up on myself and honestly trusting in God. You know, I feel like he planted that seed. I had to go to each school to develop me, honestly. And for me to be a part of those schools and, you know, not going to a big school and just being a name that went there, but I’m something at that school. They love me there, and it’s something I could give back to,” Flournoy said. “It’s not like Alabama where everybody else went there. But I went somewhere where I can make a difference.”
Flournoy went viral earlier this year talking about a coach in 9th grade who told him to give up on his NFL dreams.
“Yeah, so I was small. I was always the smallest on the field and always had the big heart,” Flournoy said. “I was 5’3′ and then my weight, I was under (one-)hundred pounds because I wrestled, so I wrestled under (one-)hundred pounds… but long story short, we were in a football meeting, and the wrestling coach walked in. They were saying everybody who played, who wrestled, that played in the NFL- names I want to say like Wes Welker, just stuff like that. And the football coach was like, anybody want to play college at the next level, wrestle. And he said, raise your hand if you want to play at the next level. Everybody raised their hand; I raised my hand. He pointed me out; he was like, no, with your size is not likely. And for me, as a kid, yeah, that hurt, but he wasn’t wrong. But God, hey, God do it, he gonna do it for sure.”
Last year, Flournoy stepped up in a big way after Lamb left the game against the Detroit Lions with a head injury. Flournoy finished the game with a career-high 115 yards. That’s more than he had his entire rookie season.
“Really, I’m just staying ready, like I prepare like nobody else, like, I try to know everybody’s job, which I do, and knowing if somebody was to go down, I could fill in with no drop-off. And unfortunately, my boy, CeeDee, went down, and they called my number, and I executed. And that’s just something, you know, I take pride in with just being ready and being reliable,” Flournoy said. “It just keeps me humble. You know, it just makes me look back at how far I’ve come. And you know, there’s a lot of room to keep going. I’m so grateful. And from little kid, from high school, to college, to rookie year, to now, it is just different versions of me. But I’ve always been the same me, just being that dog, being that workhorse, but also evolving. So man, I’m just so grateful, for real. Evolving and ready for the opportunity.”
