Cowboys-Saints joint practice marred by constant fighting during ‘sloppy' day

Дата публикации: 19-08-2026 07:24:58

The Dallas Cowboys joint practice with the New Orleans Saints would have made for a great hockey game. NBC 5’s Newy Scruggs counted at least eight fights, including second-year linebacker Donovan Ezeiruaku, who threw a punch again. Ezeiruaku was thrown out by the practice officials after they saw him throw a punch, marking the second time that’s happened during training camp. Ezeiruaku was previously thrown out of a practice for throwing a punch at Cowboys tackle Terrence Steele.
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer afterwards did not mince words. He was not pleased.
“Right now,” Schottenheimer said, “I’m in charge of fight club.”
And unlike Fight Club, Schottenheimer didn’t mind talking about it. He had to, considering how much of a storyline it was Tuesday. Schottenheimer thought about canceling the practice because there were just so many fights.
“The one thing I have learned is I don’t get in the fights. I stay back. But again, our football team needs this work. And overall, I was disappointed in the work today because I didn’t think we got enough good work. I thought there were too many bodies on the ground. And it just felt sloppy to me. So it’s what it is,” Schottenheimer said. “(Kellen Moore), and I talked about a couple of different things, and we decided once it settled down, we kind of had agreed that if a couple of other things happened, we would cancel it. But they worked through it again. They settled into it. But again, there’s a discipline element to playing this football game, and unfortunately we didn’t handle that very well today. But again, I don’t think we were the only culprits.”
The Cowboys and Saints quickly went from chippy to fighting on multiple occasions. Brief dustups soon evolved into team-wide skirmishes, including multiple punches thrown.
There were so many fights — at least a handful, plus multiple other skirmishes — that it was hard to keep track of every player involved and everything they might’ve done. Cowboys cornerback Caelen Carson also threw a punch, as seen in a video captured by The Dallas Morning News, but he stayed in the practice. It was preceded by a Saints player grabbing and holding onto his facemask.

The Cowboys’ first-team offense had success against the Saints, despite an interception; George Pickens continues to make plays.
The Cowboys and Saints will see each other again in the final preseason game at AT&T Stadium on Aug. 28.
Tuesday also marked the arrival of two-time Super Bowl champion Von Miller, who met the media in Oxnard. One thing he wants everyone to know: he’s going to be great in the room.
“You can say what you want to say about my play on the field and what I got left. When it comes to being a great teammate, like if it was a Hall of Fame for that, like I’m going to the Hall of Fame first ballot,” Miller said. “I’m probably the best teammate that ever played in the National Football League. And I say that with all confidence in the world.”
Miller had nine sacks for a five-win Washington club last year. Those nine sacks would have led the Cowboys in that department, and at 37 he says he still got it.
“When it comes to playing football and getting sacks, like I said, I could still roll out of bed to do that. It’s some things that pass rushers do that take a lot of athletic ability, and it’s some things that are all mental and intelligence too, just knowing where I fit on the pass rush, who I’m working with, time of the game, quarter, what offensive coordinator I’m going against, tendencies from offensive alignment. Those are things that don’t take any athletic ability,” Miller said.
