A leaked Xbox publisher roadmap reportedly outlines a major expansion of Microsoft’s backward-compatibility strategy. The document points to a Disc to Digital program for Xbox One and Series X, original Xbox games arriving on PC, and a gradual Xbox 360 catalog rollout on next-generation Xbox devices beginning between 2027 and 2028. Microsoft has not confirmed the plans.

Key takeaways
  • Disc to Digital is reportedly scheduled for general availability in August 2026.
  • The feature would initially support Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs.
  • Original Xbox games could receive a broader PC release in October 2026.
  • Xbox 360 titles are reportedly planned for next-generation Xbox devices from 2027 onward.
  • Publisher participation, pricing and supported games remain uncertain.
Disc to Digital could arrive in August

According to the leaked schedule, Xbox’s Disc to Digital program entered or was due to enter a public beta in July, followed by a wider launch in August. The feature would let owners insert a supported physical game into an Xbox One or Series X console and receive a digital entitlement.

The reported system would link the entitlement to the specific disc rather than permanently duplicating the game on the user’s account. If the disc changes hands, the associated license could reportedly transfer to its new owner. This would preserve some of the resale and lending functionality associated with physical games, although the exact process has not been explained.

Xbox Series S consoles would be excluded because they lack disc drives. Coverage also suggests that publishers could opt in and retain control over licensing, pricing and branding, while Xbox would handle much of the engineering, certification and customer support.

Original Xbox games may expand to PC

The roadmap reportedly lists October 2026 as the full launch of Xbox backward compatibility on PC. That could expand on an early release that made four original Xbox titles available for PC and handheld devices in July: BLiNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge and Fuzion Frenzy.

Additional games could be distributed through PC Game Pass or the Xbox Store. Existing digital licenses for some compatible titles may already carry over through Xbox Play Anywhere, but the broader catalog and its commercial terms remain unclear.

Xbox 360 support is planned for later hardware

The most ambiguous portion of the document concerns Xbox 360 games. It reportedly schedules a gradual catalog rollout between 2027 and 2028 across “next-gen Xbox devices.” That wording does not establish whether the target platforms are future consoles, Windows PCs, handhelds or a combination of devices.

Reports suggest Microsoft could use emulation, with games certified individually and requiring publisher approval. As a result, backward compatibility would likely depend on licensing agreements rather than automatically covering every Xbox 360 release.

What remains unconfirmed

Microsoft has not publicly announced the roadmap, its dates or the Disc to Digital program. References to “Disc2Digital” in the Xbox PC application and the reported publisher communication lend context to the claims, but they do not guarantee a launch or final feature set.

Compatibility lists, conversion fees, internet requirements and the treatment of borrowed or resold discs will be particularly important. Until Xbox provides official details, the leaked schedule should be treated as an unofficial plan that could change or be abandoned.
