A major Manhattan hospital will no longer offer gender-related care for minors amid mounting pressure from the Trump administration.

A spokesperson for NYU Langone Health announced on Wednesday that the hospital would discontinue its transgender youth health program, in part, due to "the current regulatory environment."

Opponents of the move, including Brooklyn-based pediatrician Dr. Jeffrey Birnbaum, called gender-related care "lifesaving"

"Those parents just feel like they are under attack. They're under siege. They're being othered by the United States government and they're just terrified," said Dr. Jeffrey Birnbaum, a Brooklyn-based pediatrician who has been treating transgender patients for more than 30 years.

He called gender-related care "lifesaving."

"One way or another, I'm not going to be silenced about this. There's a lot of young people and their parents that depend on us. The number of suicides that we've prevented taking care of young people after suicide attempts, the amount of mental health care we take care of," said Birnbaum.

He said his practice grew after NYU Langone announced early last year that it would not accept new patients into the transgender youth health program.

In December, the Trump administration said it would pull Medicare or Medicaid funding from any hospital that provides gender-related treatment for minors. U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said in a statement that "the federal government will do everything in its power to stop unsafe, irreversible practices that put our children at risk."

Julie Swoope, who started receiving gender-related care from NYU Langone 20 years ago when she was 18 years old, called the move to end the program unfair and unjust.

"It's a decision that should be made between a patient and their parents if they are a teenager themselves and a doctor. It is not something that should be decided by a politician or a hospital administrator," she said.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recommended earlier this month, "the treatment of children or adolescents with gender dysphoria be delayed until patients turn 19."

In a statement, a spokesperson said, "ASPS affirms that truly humane, ethical, and just care, particularly for children and adolescents, must balance compassion with scientific rigor, developmental considerations and concern for long-term welfare.”

Swoope disagreed, saying the type of care offered by the program benefited transgender youth well into adulthood.

"No one is taking that decision lightly when they make it for themselves and there's plenty of consideration that's gone into it before starting hormone blockers or any other treatment," she said.

A spokesperson for NYU Langone told NY1, "We are committed to helping patients in our care manage this change. This does not impact our pediatric mental health care programs, which will continue."

A position, Birnbaum said, he takes issue with.

"What value is it to say we can offer mental health services coming from the same facility that shut down their life-affirming care?" he said.
