New York Attorney General Letitia James is demanding that NYU Langone Health resume providing gender-related care for minors after the hospital announced last month it would end its transgender youth health program.

The program, which provided puberty-blocking medication and hormone treatments to teens, was discontinued following the departure of its medical director and what a hospital spokesperson described as the "current regulatory environment.”

The move came amid mounting pressure from the Trump administration, which said in December that it would pull Medicare or Medicaid funding from any hospital that provides gender-related treatment for minors.

In a letter released Tuesday, James’ office wrote that NYU Langone “appears to be suddenly and indefinitely cancelling transgender children’s future appointments thereby jeopardizing access to medically necessary healthcare for some of the most vulnerable New Yorkers.”

“The sudden discontinuation of medically necessary transgender healthcare can have severe, negative health outcomes,” the letter said. “Accordingly, the Attorney General is extremely concerned by your institution’s decision to cease the provision of care to this vulnerable, minority population.”

The letter gave the hospital 10 days to resume services.

“New York state laws prohibit discrimination based on a patient’s membership in a protected class, including sex, gender identity, and disability, and remain in full effect,” James’ office wrote, adding that federal threats to funding do not excuse hospitals from state law.

NYU Langone’s spokesperson declined to comment on the letter, pointing to the hospital’s previous statement, which said, “We are committed to helping patients in our care manage this change. This does not impact our pediatric mental health care programs, which will continue.”
