NYU Langone Health confirmed on Tuesday that it received a grand jury subpoena from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Northern Texas tied to gender transition care for minors.

PFLAG NYC’s Clark Wolff Hamel said parents immediately began reaching out, worried about what the subpoena could mean for their children’s private medical information.

“They’re terrified,” he said. “New York City can often times feel like a little bit like a bubble, and so, this really popped that bubble in a lot of ways for our families.”

Hamel said he spoke with over 30 families Tuesday alone.

“We want NYU to stand up for its patients,” he said.

The subpoena followed a January 2025 executive order from President Donald Trump aimed at restricting gender transition procedures for minors.

Tyler Hack, executive director of the Christopher Street Project, warned providers could now face legal consequences for legal care in New York state.

“This means that providers at NYU Langone could be arrested and could be put in jail,” Hack said.

Hack said while grand jury subpoenas can force disclosure of records, New York’s Shield Law still requires patients be notified 30 days before information is turned over.

NYU Langone Health said it’s evaluating its response and “takes privacy of protected health information very seriously.”

Advocates, though, argued that the broader legal fight is only beginning.

“They are getting a court thousands of miles away, notoriously the most conservative district in the country, to issue this subpoena because they don’t think that they can win based on merit,” Hack said.

NY1 reached out to both NYU Langone and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Northern Texas, but has not heard back.
