STAFFORD, Va. — A Stafford County resident is working with investigators after discovering that a mortgage payment mailed by check was allegedly altered and deposited by someone else.

The incident was reported at about 10:27 a.m. Thursday on Landmark Drive, according to the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said the victim mailed a check for a mortgage payment but was later notified that it had never been received.

After reviewing the transaction, the victim discovered the check had allegedly been altered and used for a mobile deposit.

The victim contacted their bank, which has opened an investigation into the incident.

The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office did not release information about a suspect, and the investigation remains ongoing.
