A Stafford County resident lost money after receiving a fraudulent phone call claiming to be from a financial institution, deputies said.

STAFFORD COUNTY, VA — The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents after a scammer posing as a Navy Federal Credit Union representative convinced a victim to transfer money through Cash App.

Deputies responded to a fraud report at about 11:08 a.m. Tuesday on High Water Place.

According to the sheriff’s office, the victim received a phone call from someone claiming to represent Navy Federal Credit Union. The caller allegedly told the victim there had been fraudulent transactions on the account and instructed the victim to secure the funds by transferring money through Cash App.

After sending the money, the victim realized it was a scam and ended all communication with the caller before notifying the bank.

The sheriff’s office reminded residents that legitimate banks will not ask customers to move money through third-party payment applications to protect their accounts.

The incident remains under investigation.
