STAFFORD COUNTY, VA — A Stafford County resident reported that a check mailed to pay bills was altered and fraudulently cashed after it never reached its intended recipient, according to the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Sullivan responded to the report at about 10:34 a.m. Monday, July 27, on Worth Avenue.

According to the sheriff’s office, the victim mailed a check to pay bills but later learned it had not been received. The victim then discovered the check had been altered and cashed.

The victim notified their bank, and a police report was requested as part of the investigation.

The incident remains under investigation.
