The Plymouth Township Zoning Hearing ended after nearly two and a half hours on Thursday night without a decision being made on the future of a proposed data center.
Dozens of residents packed the Colonial Middle School auditorium on Aug. 6 for the hearing on the two million-square-foot data center project, which is proposed for the former Cleveland-Cliffs steel mill site on Conshohocken Road in Montgomery County.
The atmosphere grew tense at times. People in the crowd booed and held up signs reading “SHAME” as board members discussed the selection of an expert witness for the developer.
Neighbors have continued to raise concerns about the project’s potential effects on the environment and their quality of life.
Plymouth Township residents Amber Boyd-Finch and Robert Finch, whose home would be near the proposed project, told NBC10 that the testimony presented during the hearing did little to change their opposition.
“Nothing he has said so far has made me feel comfortable as a resident who lives right across from the area, whose kids will wait at the bus stop right across the area ,” Boyd-Finch said.
“There seems to be some contradictions as far as, like, ok he’s there to do planning but he’s not here to say whether or not it’s going to affect people badly,” Finch said.
Ardis Lukens, who lives near the proposed site off Conshohocken Road at the edge of Plymouth Township near Conshohocken’s Main Street and the Schuylkill River, said she is not opposed to data centers in general, but believes they do not belong in densely populated neighborhoods.
She also expressed concerns about potential pollution from the project.
Supporters, meanwhile, argue the data center could provide significant economic benefits to the region.
Those behind the development say the project could generate an estimated $424 million in tax revenue over the next 20 years, provide additional funding for the Colonial School District and create thousands of jobs.
Brian O’Neill, a developer with MLP Ventures, told NBC10 that residents should also consider the potential financial impact of the development on the community. He said one building could add 40% to the tax base.
According to O’Neill, he has agreed to about 90% of the township’s demands and believes many residents have been misinformed about the project.
“I think it’s a lot of upset people getting bad information from bad actors,” O’Neill said.
There was no public comment during Thursday night’s hearing.
The board is expected to decide on Aug. 17 when the next hearing will be held.
