Residents in Upper Merion Township are pushing back against plans to build massive data centers in King of Prussia with tensions flaring during a packed planning meeting Tuesday night.
The proposed data centers would total 4.6 million square feet — larger than Philadelphia International Airport — and are being developed by Brian O’Neill of MLP Ventures.
Many in the community voiced strong opposition during the meeting at Upper Merion Middle School, where nearly everyone in the auditorium stood in protest when asked who opposed the project.
Residents say they are concerned about potential health and environmental impacts, strain on the power grid and other unforeseen consequences tied to the project.
“The purpose of this speech is to make the general public and the committee itself aware of fire safety and emergency preparedness,” one speaker said.
“I stand in opposition because these hyper scale AI data centers are nothing more than power plants with hard drives and they will make our community unlivable,” another said.
“He’s playing our township and he’s playing our community fishing for a stamp of approval while withholding honesty,” another speaker said.
At times, the meeting grew contentious, with back-and-forth exchanges between the planning commission and O’Neill.
The developer faces a mid-August deadline to secure approval from the Upper Merion Board of Supervisors to move the project forward.
