After nearly three decades of serving burritos, smoothies, bowls, and wraps, Boloco will close its final restaurant, marking the end of the Boston-born chain. 

The company’s last remaining location at 50 Congress St. will permanently close Sept. 25, according to a post on X. The announcement cited the building’s planned conversion into a residential building as the reason for the closure. 

“It’s been a hell of a ride,” the company wrote in the post. 

The Congress Street building is part of Boston’s office-to-residential conversion program. In May, the Planning Board approved plans to transform the property into 169 apartments.

Boloco was once a fixture across New England, with 22 locations in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., at its peak in the 2010s. 

The chain dwindled to about eight locations by 2020, and last year it closed its second-to-last restaurant near Boston Children’s Hospital, leaving the Congress Street shop as its only location.

Boloco, or Boston Local Co., was founded by four friends: Gregg Harris, Jason Hutchinson, Adam Leibman, and John Pepper in 1997 with its first shop called Under Wraps at the corner of Massachusetts Ave. and Boylston, across from the Berklee College of Music. 

Boloco sold a controlling stake to private equity firm Winona Capital in 2007 to fuel expansion. After leaving the company in 2013, co-founder John Pepper bought the chain back in June 2015 and led an effort to return it to profitability. 

In a blog post, Pepper said that after the COVID-19 pandemic, it was hard to keep stores open after leases came to an end. 

What kept the last store open was his “passionate team members” and his “relentless goal to pay livable wages … while maintaining healthy profit margins.” 

He said he enjoyed visiting the store, often being in charge of store upgrades and installations. In one video, he is seen building the shelves for take-out orders. 

“29 years. Still here. Still grateful. 30 will be a stretch, but we’ve come this far, it’s not unlikely (also not guaranteed) we squeeze another year out of this thing,” the post reads.
