The latest addition to the fedDSP line-up promises to deliver smooth-sounding gain reduction, musical movement and a ‘finished’ tone, all without sounding forced.
The latest addition to the fedDSP line-up has just been announced, and packs four distinct optical compressor emulations into a single, convenient plug-in. Appropriately named Opto, the new arrival promises to deliver smooth-sounding gain reduction, musical movement and a ‘finished’ tone, all without sounding forced.
Opto is said to capture the relaxed, musical sound for which optical compressors are praised, and given how much variation there is in the design and sound of such units, fedDSP say it didn’t seem right to focus on a single example! As such, they’ve created four independent modes that each affect the behaviour, feel and character of the compressor, its program-dependent settings, saturation and overall response.
Four Compression ModesHere’s a quick look at what each mode offers:
An array of tone-shaping tools are included, too. A Drive control adds some additional harmonics — in a subtle way rather than turning the plug-in into a distortion! — while Trafo emulates transformer-based circuitry, offering some subtle ‘density’ and a more hardware-like ‘thickness’. Finally, there’s Detail, a gentle upward compressor that lifts quieter information and presence in a controlled way, offering clarity and focus without pushing the top end into harshness. The main editor also includes Clarity, Tone and Depth settings that offer some control over brightness, overall balance and low-end weight.
Selecting the plug-in’s advanced settings reveals some tools aimed at more in-depth tweaking, including high-pass and low-pass filters, a parallel mix knob, dual mono/stereo modes, auto-gain and a variable side-chain high-pass filter that helps focus the compression on desired frequency range.
Key FeaturesOpto is supported on PCs running Windows 10 and above, and Macs running macOS 10.13 or higher. VST3, AU and AAX plug-in versions are available.
Pricing & AvailabilityOpto is available now, and is being offered at an introductory price of £35 until 6 August 2026, when it will increase to its full cost of £75. Prices include VAT.
