Samsung is partnering with CLEAR to offer a digital US passport option that’s already supported at airports.

Samsung ID with CLEAR is the product of a partnership between the two companies. CLEAR has an existing presence and integration with the TSA that allows Samsung to get its foot in the door, presenting Samsung Wallet users with a digital passport option that will be available in “select” airports.

According to Samsung’s announcement, users will be able to integrate their US passport to be verified by CLEAR. A membership with CLEAR doesn’t appear to be necessary. The basic CLEAR ID can be used when users choose to use the feature in Samsung Wallet. The option to upgrade to CLEAR+ is available, but seemingly not needed.

This doesn’t replace the method for adding your digital state ID, as that’s a separate process in Samsung Wallet. Both methods will be accepted at “more than 250” TSA checkpoints in the US.

Samsung says the passport feature can be used by heading to Quick Access > + > Digital IDs > Samsung ID with CLEAR > Get Card in the Samsung Wallet app. Users will need to be verified with CLEAR for the ID to process in Samsung Wallet. When it’s added, it can be used in place of a physical passport at certain checkpoints.

Google recently expanded availability for Google Wallet passport integration, though it doesn’t carry the same verification process by CLEAR. Whether that matters at certain checkpoints remains to be seen. There’s likely to be some user friction until a large number of travelers opt for digital IDs over physical booklets.
