It has been well over 30 years since the great New York indie rock trio Blonde Redhead released their debut album, and it has been just over a year since then ended their Coachella set with a powerful statement of solidarity with Palestinian people. It has been well over 30 years since the great New York indie rock trio Blonde Redhead released their debut album, and it has been just over a year since then ended their Coachella set with a powerful statement of solidarity with Palestinian people. They're a band with a great history, and they're ready to add to it today, as they follow their 2023 album Sit Down For Dinner with the new single "Blood Spilled."

Like many Blonde Redhead tracks, "Blood Spilled" is a lush, gorgeously oblique sprawl that creates its own kind of atmosphere. Here's what bandleader Kazu Makino, who also did the cover art, says about it:

The last few years have been for the world and me a relentless season of loss. Devastated through this era I learned that death means the end of the body but not
the soul.

I am still connected to those who are no longer part of this world and the spirits that
were never part of this world. I speak to them and I hear them. They show me signs
to let me know we are much more than our bodies and most of all, I feel their love.

There are people who are so afraid of dying and decay that they go against their own interest and the law of nature. While I know death is not the end, I’ve also come in full circle to recognize the power and magic of the body that houses the soul.

This song embraces our incredible edge over those who no longer have bodies. While we are here on this earth, this is our time, our pain and our joy. We own them. I sing and scream just to hear myself do so until my soul abandons and exits the physical plane.

This song is about the free will of our soul and body down to each and every cell.

And speaking of Blonde Redhead, the Strokes, another venerable New York band from the generation after theirs, recently paid them tribute. At a show in Cincinnati a few weeks ago, the Strokes covered "This Is Not," a song from Blonde Redhead's classic 2000 album Melody Of Certain Damaged Lemons. Here's the video:

The "Blood Spilled" single is out now on section1.
