A bench had been hastily moved and tipped upside down near one of the open trenches, revealing a huge wasp nest tucked between the leg and the seat. It had been months since her fire magic had worked properly, if at all. She reached for her lightning instead.The bolt of necrosis that shot from her hands exploded the hornet nest. She stumbled backwards into the trench and fell onto her hands and butt in the open dirt.The magic never stopped casting.She channeled it into the soil, desperately trying to cut off the flow of the Fade. The whispers in her head grew in volume; all were full of excitement. Jacobus stared down at her, panic marring his young features.When the magic was spent, so was Gemma. She dusted the dirt off her hands and looked at them. First her fire, now her lightning. The necrotic magic was consuming her slowly and she had no idea how to control it, much less call on it. Every time she had tried to specifically cast a necrotic spell, for which Bellara had unearthed a few from the Lighthouse for her, nothing had happened.It was as if the necrotic magic wanted to control her, rather than the other way around.That was unacceptable.“Gemma.”Jacobus’s voice was no longer laced panic, but with fear. The dirt on her left trembled like a small, localized earthquake. She scrambled backwards out of the trench and reached for her knives. Knives didn’t betray her like her magic was.
