The grid operator for Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware is proposing a registry for all large load energy users, such as data centers. Should there be a shortage, PJM could reduce electricity use first from these sites, according to the report.
The operator released a summary of the proposal on Monday.
In it, the organization says “this registry will provide the critical data transparency needed to establish load reduction priorities for retail customers.”
PJM’s proposal would require large energy users to report a variety of details including their location, how much power they need to operate, if they have access to back up electricity, and whether they’re adding new sources to the grid.
“Under this framework, Large Loads can interconnect without bringing their own new capacity,” the summary reads. “However, they must reduce their load or switch to on-site backup resources under specific, limited circumstances.”
Residents in communities where data centers are proposed have raised concerns about the strain on the grid during recent township meetings.
In a statement released to NBC10, a spokesperson said the board is moving “targeted actions to strengthen reliability in response to the region’s growing resource adequacy challenge.”
The list of large load sites would be updated regularly, and PJM plans to publish summaries but won’t identify any confidential information, according to the summary.
The group defines large load as any facility using more than 50 megawatts of energy at a single site, which is smaller than what is considered a hyperscale center. Currently, PA, NJ and DE don’t have any hyperscale facilities, but more than 30 are proposed, according to the Data Center Proposal Tracker.
The grid provides power to 13 different states including Virginia, which houses an area dubbed as “data center alley.” In that area alone, there are more than 270 operational data centers currently.
