I have never been fully on board with the idea of camping. Shivering inside a sleeping bag, the chance of rain keeping you tent-bound, and the thought of eating tins of cold beans for tea never really floated my boat.
However, when you add a hot tub, mattresses, and handcrafted pizza to the mix, I am in.
This is, of course, the world of glamping, and there really isn't a better way to enjoy the great outdoors if you like to maintain a touch of luxury.
With this in mind, my family of three decided to take a trip to Stanley Villa Farm Fishing and Camping, which is just a short 35-minute drive from Greater Manchester.
With a toddler obsessed with camping, it was the ideal introduction to the great outdoors and a perfect excuse for a family holiday.
The award-winning family-run glamping site in Weeton With Preese, Fylde, features a mix of wooden pods and bell tents set amid lush green fields, ponds and lakes.
We opted to stay in one of the 'Woods View' pods, which came with its own fire pit and hot tub. Inside the simple, but cosy accommodation, there was a single and double mattress (make sure to bring your own pillows, bedding and sheets), electric lights and a heater if needed.
Attached to the pod via wooden decking was a wood-fired hot tub - which meant we had to get the fire going ourselves unless we fancied a cooler dip. Getting the fire started was a breeze with the burner stacked with logs and firelighters, meaning all I needed to do was light it with a match and add another piece of wood every hour or so.
For us, the hot tub took about 2 hours to reach a comfortable temperature, and was a great way for the three of us to end the day. And to my suprise the water was still lovely and warm the following morning, which provided us with a great excuse to have one last dip before check-out.
Each pod also comes with its own wood burner, which we got going as the sun began to set. Getting fires going isn't a strong skill, but with plenty of wood and firelighters provided, we got it burning in no time.
S'mores kits containing marshmallows, chocolate and rich tea biscuits are also available to give you the ultimate campfire experience before bed.
One thing missing from the pods is plug sockets to charge your phone, which means you have to literally switch off while staying at Stanley Villa Farm. However, don't worry if you can't bear to be without your phone, as the communal area has plenty of sockets you can use, as well as a kitchen and cosy dining area. You can also hire battery packs from reception.
There is a separate toilet and shower block, which was clean and, most importantly, has excellent water pressure for those hot showers in the morning.
Outside the cabin, there was plenty for us to do, without even leaving the site. In particular, my four-year-old was smitten with the sheep, goats and chickens and loved the chance to get close to them during the daily 4pm petting and feeding time, led by owner Alex Young.
He also loved the 'tiki trail', which takes you on the path around the sprawling campsite, woods and fields with the task of finding all the hidden statues marked on a map.
And as an added incentive for little ones, if you manage to spot them all they get a sweet prize at the end. We also couldn't get him away from the outdoor activity area, which had games such as ping pong, bean bag toss and child-friendly archery and axe-throwing.
While you can bring your own BBQ or food to cook at your pod or in the communal kitchen, we decided to try some of the freshly cooked pizzas from the on-site food van.
We shared a Hawaiian (£12) and a spicy hot honey (£13), which were absolutely delicious, with tangy tomato sauce and a thin, crispy base. Meanwhile, my son demolished a hot dog (£4).
The van also opens again in the mornings to cook yummy breakfast butties from £3.50.
Stanley Villa Farm is the perfect place to comfortably enjoy a night (or a few) in quiet and quaint surroundings without having to cope with the tribulations of camping in a tent. Despite most of the pods being occupied, it never felt busy, and the strict rules around noise meant we got a great night's sleep.
The site is the perfect spot for a family getaway, and fortunately for us, living in Greater Manchester is right on our doorstep.
And it must have made an impression, as my son is already asking us when we are taking him camping again.
Fact fileSimon and his family stayed as guests of Stanley Villa Farm Fishing & Camping in Greenhalgh, near Preston. The site is approximately 15 minutes’ drive from Blackpool and around 20 minutes from Lytham St Annes and the Fylde Coast.
Accommodation includes traditional camping pods, heated pods, family pods, pods with wood-fired hot tubs, bell tents and bell tents with hot tubs. Options are available for both couples and families.
The family stayed in a Woods View Family Pod with a private wood-fired hot tub. The pod contains a double bed and a single bed, with space for additional children’s airbeds if required. It also has internal lighting and a private decked area.
