Yorkshire has emerged as a top choice for holidaymakers who favour a staycation over flying abroad. One especially picturesque spot in the historic county is the coastal town of Whitby.
Despite this, those arranging a visit can struggle to secure last-minute accommodation in the town centre. Thankfully, there are numerous neighbouring towns with vacancies that are just a short distance away, such as Grosmont, which sits roughly 20 minutes' drive from the seaside destination.
For instance, Barn Owl's Nest has been praised by guests as a romantic retreat offering stunning views while being available from as little as £770, depending on the season. The converted stone barn features an open-plan living area with rustic exposed timber beams and stone walls.

Nestled in the quaint village of Gormont, the property is just a short walk away from the North York Moors National Park, an ideal spot for those who like going on daily walks while taking in stunning views. The village itself also boasts a heavy traditional countryside atmosphere, coming complete with stone buildings, tea rooms, and classic pubs.
Meanwhile, those who want a day at the beach are only 9.5 miles away from the seaside town of Whitby. The town has become a famous spot for those who want to appreciate Gothic architecture while also taking in plenty of the benefits associated with a seaside town.
This includes visits to a sandy beach where you can enjoy some classic fish and chips. Barn Owl's nest itself comes with an open-plan living space alongside underfloor heating to keep you comfortable. It also comes fully equippeed wth a kitchen alongside a breakfast bar to enjoy your meals, reports Leeds Live.
Holidaycottages.co.uk highlights that the cottage is the "epitome of perfection for couples seeking a romantic retreat amidst idyllic surroundings". This is compounded by the lounge area's log burner, which can make for especially romantic evenings.
If you would prefer to stay in the heart of Whitby, you could opt to stay at One Union Mill. This garden apartment provides ground-floor accommodation, a garden and patio area, and convenient access to nearby shops and pubs.
Otherwise, you could opt to stay at Above & Beyond, a second-floor accommodation in the heart of Whitby. This property is perfect for guests travelling in groups of up to four and offers plenty of amenities, including a kitchen, two bedrooms, and a smart TV.
Visitors who previously stayed at Barn Owl's Nest had favourable things to say about their time there, with one traveller writing: "Fantastic place to stay. Very comfy barn with great views. The bed was so comfortable. Loved the outside space. Absolutely loved the decor. The fireplace was beautiful, though we didn't need a fire."
Another added: "A wonderful cottage, so tastefully renovated with fabulous views. Perfect location for visiting the wonderful towns and villages and the seaside. Lovely walk down to the village of Grosmont, where we sampled a few drinks. Fabulous break and hopefully we will visit again before too long."
A third said: "The cottage is located in a stunning location, surrounded by beautiful countryside views and is only a short drive to the coastal town of Whitby. Louise was extremely helpful and attentive 5* for customer service. Would highly recommend booking this cottage for anyone looking for a peaceful getaway."
A fourth added: "Perfect for exploring the moors and the coast, the cottage is beautifully appointed and is in a fantastic location with lovely views down to the valley. It’s an easy and very pleasant 10 minute walk down the path to the village of Grosmont where there is a general stores, a friendly pub and railway station.
"We very much appreciated the welcome pack of bread, milk, biscuits etc, as well as the eggs from the owners’ free-range chickens! We had a lovely week and would thoroughly recommend a stay at Barn Owl’s Nest."
While a fifth said: "Fantastic location with hills surrounding the beautiful countryside. Lovely walk into Grosmont. Friendly people in and around the cottage. Comfortable chairs, luxurious bed, very well equipped cottage with a decent welcome hamper of bread, butter, milk and biscuits."
A sixth added: "One of the best. Cottages we’ve ever stayed at, perfect location, wonderful, friendly owners, no downsides whatsoever."
While there has been significant praise for the location, travellers should bear in mind that it doesn't accommodate dogs or other furry friends. Furthermore, the cottage can only accommodate up to two people, making it less than ideal for those who plan on travelling in larger groups.
