Two more reported candidates popped up Monday in the Sixers’ search for a new front office leader.
Cavaliers general manager Mike Gansey and Phoenix Mercury GM Nick U’Ren “have emerged as names to watch in Philadelphia’s front office search,” Marc Stein reported.
Gansey has been in the Cavs’ organization since 2011 and worked his way up from the G League. He serves under Cleveland president of basketball operations Koby Altman.
The Cavs have won plenty of games during Gansey’s tenure as GM. After a 64-18 season last year, they’ve broken through to the Eastern Conference Finals. Cleveland built much of its current core with bold trades. The Cavs made deals to acquire Donovan Mitchell, James Harden and Jarrett Allen. They drafted Evan Mobley (No. 3 overall pick in 2021) and Jaylon Tyson (No. 20 in 2024).
Gansey was a college sharpshooter back in the day and helped West Virginia make March Madness runs in 2005 and 2006.
U’Ren worked under Bob Myers during his time with the Warriors. Myers, who’s conducting the Sixers’ search, is a major admirer of U’Ren’s.
“He’s seen a lot of winning,” Myers told The Athletic’s Marcus Thompson II last year. “He cares. He was very, very studious. How many people worked on a bench and in the front office? I think it’s kind of a rare combo. So it gives them a great understanding of an organization, how it operates. There’s an authenticity to him that makes him someone people want to follow. And he’s very humble. … It’s really been an awesome kind of validation of his process.”
As Thompson details, U’Ren was a special assistant to Warriors head coach Steve Kerr before joining Golden State’s front office and had the series-shifting idea to start Andre Iguodala over Andrew Bogut during the 2015 NBA Finals.
U’ren took the Mercury GM job in 2023. Phoenix reached the WNBA Finals last season and fell to the Las Vegas Aces.
