Sebastian Behalter is off to the English Championship's Middlesbrough F.C., Postmedia has confirmed.

Sebastian Berhalter’s run as one of the premier midfielders in Major League Soccer is over, with him set to move from the Vancouver Whitecaps to Middlesbrough of the English Championship, Postmedia has confirmed. The Athletic’s Tom Bogert was first to report the news.

There are still a few details to be worked out, but assuming everything gets done, the Whitecaps will receive a $2 million transfer fee for Berhalter. The 25-year-old was set to be a free agent at the end of the year.

A source confirmed to Postmedia on Wednesday that transfer talks had heated up around Berhalter, but didn’t identify a team. Berhalter was held out of the Whitecaps’ lineup in their Wednesday evening match in Cincinnati, which the Whitecaps lost 4-3. Berhalter also didn’t suit up in either of the Whitecaps’ Canadian Championship matches earlier this month, where they defeated Cavalry FC 5-2 on aggregate to advance to the semi-finals; the last time Berhalter played for Vancouver was on May 23, a 4-2 defeat of San Diego FC.

He then played five times for the United States at the World Cup, starting once vs. Turkey. He scored the U.S.’s second goal in the match, which briefly tied the score at two.

In all, he played 167 times across all competitions for the Whitecaps, scoring 20 goals; 15 of those goals came this season and the last.

Middlebrough might seem an odd choice for a player who has been playing at such a high level, but American midfielder Aidan Morris is already at the Yorkshire club. Morris and Berhalter are very close, having been friends since their days in the Columbus Crew academy.

Berhalter’s growth as a player goes back to the Whitecaps picking him up in 2022 after Austin FC cast him aside. The son of a former American star, he had shown promise at times in Austin and in Columbus, but was thought of mostly as an energy player, a guy who would run miles, but that’s it.

Whereas Berhalter struggled to find a role in Columbus and then Austin, Morris quickly became a first-team regular for the Crew. Aged just 19, he started for the Crew in the 2020 MLS Cup final, won 3-0 by Columbus. By 2023, he was a key figure for the Crew in their second championship. In 2024, he joined Middlebrough. Last season, Boro finished fifth in the Championship, the second division of English soccer. They lost in the promotion playoff final, just missing out on the Premier League for this season.

Signing Berhalter, who was actually born in London while his dad Gregg was playing for Crystal Palace, is a big move to help drive the 150-year-old club to promotion.

In Vancouver, Berhalter became an all-action man. He scored goals. He created goals. He became a master at set pieces. His ferocious attitude drew praise from teammates and coaches alike. He was a leader on a team full of leaders.

Just about every analysis site rated him as the best midfielder in the league.

Under Mauricio Pochettino, he found a role in the U.S. men’s national team as well.

And now he’s off to chase his dream. He will forever be a Whitecaps legend now.

The question is, will Caps CEO Axel Schuster be able to find a midfielder to fill the gap that has been left by Berhalter. There are some handy players in the squad already — Jeevan Badwal, Oliver Larraz, J.C. Ngando, Ralph Priso — but no one who is even close to filling Berhalter’s shoes full-time. There are a few intriguing options out there, but signing a high-end player could be difficult given that the Caps don’t have a free designated player spot on their roster at the moment.

There are creative solutions to the problem, given the league’s byzantine roster rules, but safe to say finding a solution to this won’t be easy.
