Dael Fry insists he has no problem with his fitness, as he hit back at claims over his injury record that left Middlesbrough reluctant to give the defender a new deal.
Fry made a shock exit from Boro this summer, joining Championship rivals Birmingham City as his contract expired this summer.
The expectation had been that the Teessider would come to terms on a new extended contract at the Riverside.
However, it’s understood that Boro were reluctant to meet Fry’s demands for a new deal because of their concern over his injury record in recent seasons. You have to go back to the 2020-21 season for the last time the 28-year played in more than 75% of Boro’s 46 Championship games.
Nevertheless, Fry remained a key player on Teesside in recent years and played a crucial role in the run to the play-off final under Kim Hellberg last term. Missing only a handful of games after Christmas, he captained the side every time he started too.
And sitting down with our sister site Birmingham Live and he continues preparations for the new season with new club Birmingham City, Fry addressed the concerns over his injuries.
“At the start of last season I really took it seriously in terms of looking after my body,” Fry said. “I wrote down a lot of goals on my phone, my notes, and I was making sure I was ticking everything.
“I didn’t really want to leave a stone unturned. I didn’t want to have any excuses. If you’re doing everything and you’re still getting injured then you can think, ‘What's going on here?’
“But I did try and stay fit, and do all my recovery stuff, and I stayed fit from mid-December onwards. I had no tightness anywhere, did all my recovery stuff, and I kind of learnt about my body.
“It took a while but I know what I need, what I don’t need, what’s good for me and I’m going to bring that here.”
That learning process, he feels, was important. At times, given his importance to Boro in recent years, he feels he maybe pushed himself to play when he maybe shouldn’t have.
“No disrespect to Middlesbrough, at times because they wanted me on the pitch – myself as well, if I had tightness I’d be wanting to play – sometimes it’s a case of missing one or two games instead of eight and listening to your body,” he said.
“Injuries are part of the game but I strongly believe I’ve got the blueprint of my own body, which has taken a lot of trial and error over the years, and it’s more mental for me in terms of when I am feeling tightness to take my foot of the gas instead of playing and getting injured.”

Now at Birmingham, and as a result directly opposing his boyhood club for promotion to the Premier League next season, Fry is hoping his new club’s unique methods and serious thinking on injuries can help him even more.
That’s largely inspired by Blues minority shareholder Tom Brady, who continued his top-level NFL career into his 40s.
At Birmingham, he’s introduced the The TB12 Method, which involves drinking plenty of water and electrolytes, massages before and after training to lengthen out muscles, and the right recovery.
Alex Guerrero - Brady’s long-time body coach - has been given licence to implement his methods at the Midlands club, and Fry is hoping he sees the benefits.
He said: “My main aim is to stay fit throughout the season and play as many games as I can, I strongly believe I can do that here, especially under the new regime with the Tom Brady stuff.
“If that stuff works for Tom Brady, it can work for me! I’m excited to try something different and hopefully it works.”
Fry had options this summer. Staying at his beloved Boro and remaining a one-club man had its obvious attractions. There were other interested clubs closer to Teessider too. But Blues boss Chris Davies helped seal his decision in the end.
“I could have gone to a team closer to home but I’ve come to Birmingham because of the way he spoke about the club, the way he wants to play, the type of person he wants in the dressing room,” Fry said.
“I do believe this club is suited to me. I’m 28 coming up 29 but I do believe I’m in my prime years and I feel like I’m only getting better as a player.
“I think sometimes when you’re a one-club man it’s always lovely and it could be a great story, but I just wanted to try something new, meet new people and step out of my comfort zone a little bit.
“I do believe that will bring an extra 10 percent out of myself because sometimes when you get a bit comfortable you get a bit lazy. I just wanted to try something new and give it a right good go.
“You can always learn something in the Championship, it’s different each year, so I believe I’ll be playing my best football at Birmingham and the manager really gave a good talk about the club and what it’s about.
“The first few days were a little bit difficult having to say goodbye to the missus and kids and not return home from training, but these are sacrifices that you have to make to get the best out of your career.”
