Middlesbrough’s move to sign striker Will Lankshear has taken a step closer as a deal was agreed with Tottenham Hotspur.
Lankshear is understood to have travelled to Teesside on Tuesday to complete a medical and finalise personal terms as he closes in on his move to Boro.
Teesside Live understands that a package that could be worth up to £20million has been agreed between the two clubs.
However, sources claim Boro are only paying £8m initially, with a further £12m connected to performance-related bonuses.
As is standard with the transfers of young players - and as Boro have profited from this summer - Tottenham have included a sell-on fee clause, believed to be 20%. It means they’ll be due 20% of any future fee Boro might receive in selling Lankshear down the line, just as Boro will this summer when Morgan Rogers completes his move from Aston Villa to Chelsea.
Interestingly though, it’s understood the agreement between Boro and Spurs also includes a 'matching rights on future bids' clause.
Effectively, the clause means that if, at any point down the line Boro accept an offer for the 21-year-old striker, Spurs will have to be notified and will have the option to match the bid and attempt to re-sign the striker.
The clause protects Spurs in the eventuality that Lankshear thrives on Teesside and becomes a star courted by top Premier League or European clubs.

There’s an element of protection for Boro also though, in comparison to a more common buy-back clause, which was initially suggested by Tottenham, but negotiated down by Boro.
A buy-back clause would have seen Boro and Spurs agree a fee now that at any point in the future Boro would be obliged to accept if Spurs made that bid.
From a Boro perspective, such a clause would leave them vulnerable to Lankshear developing and rising in market value beyond the price they’d be obliged to accept if Tottenham activated the clause.
With all agreed between the two clubs, including the matching bid rights, Lankshear is now putting the finishing touches on his move and is expected to be announced as a Boro player in the coming days.
Boro have beaten significant competition to land the striker, after his impressive loan spell at Oxford United last term. Spurs are known to have rejected offers from Southampton, Wolves and Sporting CP.
Lankshear will become Boro’s third summer signing, following the arrivals of Myles Peart-Harris and Kyle Joseph - who was encouragingly back in training on Tuesday following an ankle injury.
