Middlesbrough are considering a move for Tottenham Hotspur defender Ashley Phillips, as their summer recruitment drive continues.
On Wednesday, Will Lankshear became the club’s third summer signing after completing a move from Tottenham to Boro. It’s considered a coup for Kim Hellberg’s side.
But their business dealings with Spurs this summer may not be done there. As first revealed by Alan Nixon, Boro have been looking at Phillips as a potential replacement for Dael Fry this summer.
Fry opted to turn down a new contract at Boro this summer and instead signed for Championship rivals Birmingham City.
Spurs are understood to be open to selling Phillips, 21, this summer, and he is understood to be a player Boro are looking at, as they weigh up their options for the position.
However, a deal has been described as ‘not easy to do’, meaning, at this stage at least, he is only one of a number of options being considered by the club.
Hellberg has Adilson Malanda, Alfie Jones and Luke Ayling available to him currently, while there are a number of promising prospects in the academy too, including Jack Daley, who starred at Celtic last weekend.

But they are expected to make at least one more senior centre-back signing, with Phillips a potential after shining during a two-year loan spell at Stoke City.
The defender, who is an England Under-21 international, has already made over 100 Championship appearances, after previously emerging from Blackburn Rovers’ academy before his switch to North London, and then also spending half a season at Plymouth Argyle.
Last term he made 44 appearances for Stoke, with his performances earning him a nomination for the Championship Young Player of the Year award.
News of interest in Phillips comes as Boro ramp up their transfer business ahead of the new season. The arrival of Lankshear complements the previous arrivals of versatile attackers Kyle Joseph and Myles Peart-Harris.
Boro are also understood to be progressing well on more deals too, with an ambition to strengthen Hellberg’s squad for a promotion push in the upcoming season.
