Myles Peart-Harris says his preferred position is playing as an eight, but insists he’ll do whatever Kim Hellberg asks of him in a Boro shirt.
The summer signing joined Boro on a free transfer this summer on the back of a short spell at Oxford United. There, much like during his previous loan at Swansea City, he was primarily used as a versatile attacker.
And it was where he was expected to be used at Boro too, before his surprise role in the midfield during last weekend’s draw with Celtic. He played the more progressive eight role, with Adilson Malanda sitting deeper as a six.
It’s not a new role to Peart-Harris by any means though, with the advanced midfield role one he played often while breaking through at Brentford. Hellberg said after that he values the new man’s versatility and ability to play multiple roles well.
And asked if he had a preference, Peart-Harris admitted: “Yeah, of course. My preference is playing as a running number eight, a high number eight.
“I like to make box to box runs and arrive in the box at the right time. But yeah, wherever I get on I’ll give my all. I’ve played all over the place.
“In the last few seasons I’ve played higher up the pitch. But when I was younger I played deeper. I even used to play center back as well!
“So really, versatility is something that I have in my game. Wherever the manager wants me to play, I'll look to give 100% and do what I can for the team.”
Peart-Harris’ arrival this summer is an interesting one. Boro have always planned for an ambitious summer. Indeed, the pieces have begun falling into place for them in the last week.
Peart-Harris’ arrival, though the first of the summer, was more about addressing the concerns last season with squad depth.
The 23-year-old came through Brentford’s academy, having been part of the Chelsea set up prior to that. He’s a young player Boro have been aware of for some years.
But as yet, at senior level, he’s not quite made that step from exciting prospect to bonafide first-team star.
That’s what he’s hoping to do on Teesside though, with Boro officials taking a bit of a calculated gamble on him. They did similar with Peart-Harris’ former England youth international team-mate Morgan Rogers - and the development of players like that at Boro in recent years certainly played its part in luring Peart-Harris.
“I feel like the other loans and my parent club Brentford were stepping stones to build me and build my character on and off the pitch,” he said.
“I feel like now is the time where I can find a home, settle down and just kick on and show everyone what I'm good at, and what I've learned over the last couple of years.

“I feel like what Middlesbrough have done with players in the past is evident and where they are now obviously shows how important the part that Middlesbrough had to play was.
“But my focus is obviously just on Middlesbrough and looking to get into the Premier League and looking to stay as long as possible.”
Asked if he spoke to Rogers at all before joining Boro, he said: “I didn’t speak to Morgan directly, no. I spoke to a few of the boys that've been on loan in the past. Samuel Illing Jr. and Marcus Forss. They both had positive things to say about the club.
“They've just said that there are no negatives about the club. You'll go in, you'll enjoy it and when you play, you'll be happy.
“They told me the staff are all good people too, and I’ve thought that from the moment I walked in. From the kit man, the chefs, the coaching staff, everyone has made me feel welcome.”
Now two weeks into his Boro spell, he’s had the benefit of a training camp in Portugal and also the friendly at Celtic Park last weekend to help him settle in.
“All good,” he said when asked how he was finding things. “No negatives to say about anything - about the staff, about the players, about the club.
“It’s very intense, very detailed. The Portugal trip was good. It was a positive starter for me to help me integrate with the squad.
“Celtic was a good, strong team performance and a good building block for us to work on. There were a lot of good patterns on the ball especially, that the staff wanted us to implement in our play. I think it came off very decently. So yeah, positive overall.”
Middlesbrough are preparing for a big summer as they look to rebuild from the heartarche of missing out on promotion to the Premier League.
