A new documentary revisiting the Scott Peterson murder trial examines alternative theories and evidence about the case more than 20 years after Peterson was found guilty by a jury of killing his wife and their unborn child.

TODAY got an exclusive look at the two-part A&E documentary, “Scott Peterson: The New Evidence,” which airs on July 16 to 17 and focuses on the work of the Los Angeles Innocence Project. The organization has been assisting Peterson, 53, in his quest for a new trial and says prosecutors may have had “tunnel vision” when focusing on Peterson as the prime suspect in the death of his pregnant wife, Laci Peterson, in 2002.

Peterson is currently serving a life sentence without parole for the killings of his wife and their unborn son, Conner.

In the A&E documentary, host Chris Pixley, a former defense attorney, retraces Peterson’s steps on the day his wife disappeared and raises questions about the integrity of the investigation. Laci Peterson was last seen in her home in Modesto, California, on Dec. 24, 2002. Her body and the body of her unborn child washed ashore in the San Francisco Bay four months later.

The show also investigates handwritten notes allegedly penned by Laci Peterson that suggest she was aware her husband had purchased the fishing boat prosecutors said he used to dump her body. The state alleged that Scott Peterson had purchased the boat in secret.

Peterson told investigators he went fishing in the Berkeley Marina on the day his wife was last seen and then arrived home to find the family dog on a leash in the backyard and no sign of Laci.

The theory that Laci Peterson’s murder could have been connected to a burglary across the street from their home is also examined in the A&E special. The L.A. Innocence Project says police dismissed potentially key witnesses too quickly. The documentary includes interviews with alleged witnesses.

Prosecutors said during the five-month trial in 2004 that Scott Peterson had faked his wife’s disappearance after he had dumped her body in the Berkeley Marina on Christmas Eve in 2002. Peterson’s attorneys suggested she was killed after she stumbled upon a burglary, according to NBC News.

Jon Buehler, a retired Modesto Police Department detective who worked the original case, told Fox News on July 15 that those witnesses were not seen as credible.

“None of these people knew Laci before this,” he said. “And all these names were presented to the defense. They could have been called as witnesses.”

Laci Peterson’s mother, Sharon Rocha, told People “there is no new evidence.” She declined comment on the A&E documentary.

Scott Peterson has made repeated attempts to get a new trial. In 2024, a judge rejected all but one of the Los Angeles Innocence Project’s requests for additional DNA testing. In April, a judge denied Peterson’s request to present new evidence, according to NBC Bay Area affiliate KNTV.

“Peterson’s 2004 conviction has been upheld through two decades of post-conviction litigation and again with this ruling in 2026,” the Stanislaus County District Attorney said in a statement to NBC News. “Laci, Conner and their family deserve the finality that justice promised them.”

Peterson’s trial and conviction have been the subject of multiple documentaries over the years, including Netflix’s “American Murder: Laci Peterson” and Peacock’s “Face to Face With Scott Peterson,” which were both released in August 2024.
