A Clip Of Tom Holland Doing Ballet Is Going Viral After People Criticized His Casting In The Upcoming Fred Astaire Biopic, And You Simply Have To See This For Yourself“I feel like marvel had people forgetting this guy was doing theater as a kid lol.”
Between The Odyssey and Spider-Man promo tours, Tom Holland is having a very busy few months — and the hard work isn't stopping there.
For his next role, Tom is set to play Fred Astaire in a biopic of the legendary dancer, singer, and actor. His casting was actually announced in 2021, but in a recent interview on Good Morning America, Tom gave some exciting updates on the project.
"As soon as I finish with these [promo] tours, I’m diving back into the dance studio," he said. "I did my first few rehearsals recently, and it both filled me with excitement and absolute dread because I’ve got so much work to do to try and do Fred proud."
"I have a desire to use no doubles, to do all of the dancing [myself], and to shoot those dances in one shot," Tom continued, "how [Fred] would've done it."
The response to Tom's Fred Astaire news has been a little mixed. Some are already predicting Oscar buzz, while others have expressed concerns about whether he's the right fit for the role. "uh, wasn't fred astaire famous for dancing?" reads one popular post about the casting on X.
Commentary like this has prompted fans to remind people that Tom is quite likely one of the most talented and experienced dancers among his Hollywood peers — and he's got the résumé to prove it. He did hip-hop, ballet, tap, and acrobatics from a young age and, memorably, got his big break starring in Billy Elliot the Musical on London's West End between the ages of 12 and 14. It was also his high-level dance and acrobatic training that helped him land the role of the MCU's most acrobatic superhero, Spider-Man.
And if you need any more proof that Tom possesses the skills to play Fred, fans have unearthed footage of him dancing in a rehearsal room at London's highly prestigious Royal Ballet School back in 2017, when he was around 20 years old.
You can watch the full clip here, but as a former dancer myself, I can tell you that he is making those fouettés look a lot easier than they are. On X, the video has been watched over 3.4 million times in the past day, and people are incredibly impressed — some are even surprised.
In another recent interview on Live With Kelly and Mark, Tom looked back on his dance history and revealed that he's been rehearsing for the Fred biopic in the same London studio where he first learned the Billy Elliot dances as a nine-year-old. "One of my biggest regrets in my career is that after I finished Billy Elliot, I quit dancing. So to have an opportunity to get to re-explore that world that I loved so much, that I owe so much to... I'm so excited for the challenge," he said.
Well, we've seen his tricks in the Spidey suit, and we've seen what he can do dressed up as Rihanna in fishnet stockings, so I have no doubt that his official return to dancing is going to produce something truly magical.
