The expert said this is one of the "best things" you can do for your health
A doctor has urged everyone aged over 40 to do one thing that could save their life. According to the expert, this could help alert you to a “silent killer” condition.
In a video uploaded to social media platform Instagram, Doctor Amir Khan urged people to buy an at-home blood pressure monitor. Dr Amir, who is best known for his appearances on ITV, said: “Team, if you're over the age of 40, I genuinely think one of the best things you can do at home is buy a blood pressure monitor.
“It could literally save your life.” Also known as hypertension, high blood pressure is a condition where the force of your blood against your artery walls is consistently too high.
Over time, this can cause damage to the blood vessels as well as organs. It is also a key contributing factor to many serious medical issues. However, it typically doesn't appear with any symptoms - earning it the nickname of "silent killer".
Dr Amir continued: “So what is blood pressure? Well, it's the force of blood pushing against the insides of your arteries.

“So when your heart contracts or squeezes to pump blood around your body, that's the top number. That's why it's a little higher.
“When it relaxes between beats, the pressure falls a little bit and that is your bottom number, your diastolic blood pressure.” He explained why having high blood pressure is particularly risky.
Dr Amir said: “Now, the reason is so important is that high blood pressure rarely causes any symptoms. Most people feel completely well while over years it can quietly damage your blood vessels, increasing your risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, eye disease, heart failure, and even dementia.
“That's why lots of people call it the silent killer.” Therefore, he encouraged people to regularly check their blood pressure.
You can get this done at your GP surgery, at some pharmacies, or by using a machine at home. He said: “Now, the beauty is that it's easy to measure and if it's high we can do something about it through lifestyle changes, medication, or often both.”
He explained how to take your reading. Dr Amir said: “Now you have to get an accurate reading and this is how you do it.
“Sit quietly for five minutes beforehand, avoid caffeine, smoking and exercise for about 30 minutes before if possible. Now sit with your back supported, feet flat on the floor, legs uncrossed, and rest your arm on a table so the cuff is in the level of your heart.
“And remember, keep it on your bare skin, not over clothing. Keep still, don't talk while it's measuring.
“Then take two readings, one minute apart. Do this morning and evening for seven days, ignore the first reading and average the rest - that's the measurement we use in general practice.
“So you're taking two readings, one minute apart. It's the second reading, you're most interested in or think of the first one as a practice.
“Remember, you may not feel high blood pressure but you can find it and finding it early can prevent years of damage before symptoms even appear. My top tip - buy a home blood pressure machine.”
What is considered to be high blood pressure? The only way to be sure if your blood pressure is too high is to get it tested. You can do this either with an at-home kit or by asking your GP or pharmacist.
Blood pressure readings are given as two numbers, with the first number higher than the second (for example, 130/80). According to the NHS, if you're under 80 years of age, you're usually considered to have high blood pressure if your reading is either:
If you're aged 80 or over, you're usually considered to have high blood pressure if your reading is either:

If you’re concerned about your blood pressure, you should speak to your GP.
