You should be checking about 'once a week', he said

A doctor has warned that every person over 40 should pay attention to two important numbers. These can indicate whether you are living with a “silent killer” condition.

High blood pressure, which is also known as hypertension, is a condition where the force of your blood against your artery walls is consistently too high. If left untreated, this can cause damage to the blood vessels as well as organs.

It is also a key contributing factor to many serious medical issues such as heart attacks and strokes. But it typically doesn't appear with any symptoms - earning it the nickname of "silent killer".

One way to keep track of your blood pressure is to regularly test it, which Dr Amir Khan recently endorsed for everyone of a certain age. In an episode of his podcast No Appointment Necessary, Dr Amir said: “I always say anyone over the age of 40 should have a home blood pressure machine.

“It's one of the things that I absolutely say everyone over 40 should get. I've got one and you should be checking your blood pressure at home maybe once a week I would say.”

Dr Amir, who is best known for his appearances on ITV, explained how to take an accurate reading. “And the best time to do it is sit down or lay down for 10 or 15 minutes, make sure you're nice and relaxed and then check your blood pressure,” he said.

If the monitor shows two specific numbers or above, then you must follow it up with a doctor. He continued: “And if it is consistently above 135 over 85, then you need to get that checked by your GP.

“And what would you generally say is, we want a week's worth of readings at home when you're relaxed. So we can then calculate the average.”

Dr Amir then shared more about what the numbers mean. “Now, those top and bottom numbers sound a bit confusing,” he said.

“But essentially, that top number, that 135, which is the very top it should be, is the force of blood against the inside of your blood vessels when your heart is squeezing. And then that lower number is the force of blood against the inside of your blood vessels when your heart is relaxed.”

He further warned: “And one is not more important than the other. So if when I say 135 over 85, if the top one is okay and it's below 135 and you think ‘that's alright,’ but the bottom one is above 85, then they are both equally important.

“It's not just one or the other so check your blood pressure.”

What does the NHS say?

Blood pressure readings are given as two numbers, with the first number higher than the second (for example, 130/80). According to the NHS, if you're under 80 years of age, you're usually considered to have high blood pressure if your reading is either:

  • 140/90 or higher when checked by a healthcare professional
  • 135/85 or higher when checked at home

If you're aged 80 or over, you're usually considered to have high blood pressure if your reading is either:

  • 150/90 or higher when checked by a healthcare professional
  • 145/85 or higher when checked at home

To lower your blood pressure, the NHS recommends you:

  • Have a healthy, balanced diet
  • Exercise regularly – aim to do at least 150 minutes of exercise a week
  • Lose weight if you're overweight
  • Do not eat too much salt – avoid salty food or adding salt to your meals
  • Do not drink too much alcohol – avoid drinking more than 14 alcohol units a week on a regular basis
  • Do not drink too much caffeine – drinks high in caffeine include coffee, tea and cola
  • Do not smoke

If you’re concerned about your blood pressure, you should speak to your GP.
