A second man has died after getting into difficulty in the River Derwent in Derby.

Firefighters were called to reports of a person in difficulty in the water close to Darley Street, in Darley Abbey, just after 4pm on Saturday, June 27.

The person, a 31-year-old man, was taken to hospital after receiving urgent medical care at the scene, but died days later, police have now revealed.

The death is not related to the incident in the River Derwent at Darley Abbey Mills nearby last week when two people got into difficulty while swimming in the river.

That incident, which saw one teenager rescued shortly before 4.30pm on Friday (July 10), also saw an 18-year-old's body recovered at 7.45pm that same day.

In the wake of the two deaths, police are now reminding people to stay away from open water during hot weather.

Entering open water like the River Derwent, or other locations such as old quarries, might seem like a quick break from the heat, but it is "extremely dangerous", the force has said.

People have been advised to take note of the following:

• Hidden currents, sudden changes in depth, underwater hazards and cold-water temperatures can cause even the strongest swimmers to get into difficulty within seconds.
• If someone is in trouble in the water, call 999. Do not enter the water with them.
• If you are in trouble in the water, float to live – lie back, use your arms and legs to float, and call for help when you are able.

Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service has also made a statement following the recent incidents.

Risk reduction manager, Amy Cartledge, said: "It is heartbreaking to be reporting two water-related fatalities in the same area during this period of warm weather.

"On behalf of everyone at Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service, I would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of those who have sadly lost their lives.

"While open water can appear inviting, it often contains hidden dangers, including strong currents, sudden changes in depth, submerged objects and debris that can quickly place people in difficulty.

"I would also encourage parents, guardians and carers to have conversations with children and young people about the risks associated with open water, as well as cold water shock and ensure they understand the Float to Live advice.

"Taking a few moments to understand these risks and potentially life-saving actions could help prevent further tragedies."

Temporary fencing has been installed by the city council near the banks of the river at Deans Field in Darley Abbey while it works to ensure that "public safety and emergency access are fully considered."

The city council has also echoed the advice offered by the fire service and Derbyshire police.
