EuroClio is excited to announce a new initiative to adapt existing resources locally. In 2026, we are looking for educators to adapt the lesson plans and methodology from the Monument(al) Challenges project.

The Monument(al) Challenges project aimed to support educators in teaching sensitive historical topics, such as colonialism and slavery, through inclusive and well-informed approaches. To achieve this, we developed an educational toolkit containing lesson plans, teaching strategies, learning activities, and curated source collections.

Each lesson plan will focus on one local contested monument and one skill that educators identified as relevant to addressing sensitive issues in the classroom. For local adaptations, it is important to maintain a link to the project’s objectives and content whilst also linking to the national curriculum requirements. Thus, you are free to choose which local monument you can focus on that is linked to the topics covered by your curriculum, but ensure that it is a contested monument.

EuroClio is looking for six authors to help adapt these materials, which will be delivered by September 30, 2026. The group of authors will be coordinated by the coordinators of the Monument(al) Challenges project to ensure the continuity of the project’s aims and objectives. The authors will be expected to complete the Monument(al) Challenges Self-Paced Course for familiarity with the materials to be adapted (create a free Xperiencify account first).

What do we offer?

We offer a fixed fee of 500 EUR for authors. The fee includes the drafting of the lesson plan, peer-review of one lesson drafted by a colleague and the translation of the lesson plan into the authors’ teaching language.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for authors who:

  • Have excellent writing skills in English.
  • Have proven experience in developing educational materials.
  • Have experience translating educational materials into their teaching language.
  • Are committed to joining the info session on April 8, 2026, at 16.00 CET. To see how this translates to your timezone, please click here.
  • Are interested in teaching about contested histories using a place-based learning methodology.

How to apply?

You can apply by submitting your CV, motivation letter (max. one page), and an extract of your work (for example, a lesson plan you created on the topic or methodologies mentioned) to Paula O’Donohoe at contestedhistories@euroclio.eu before March 23, 2026, at 16.00 CET.  The final selection will be notified on March 27, 2026.

On what basis will we make the selection?

  • Motivation of the applicant.
  • Experience of the applicants in drafting and translating educational materials.
  • Quality and relevance of the extract submitted.
  • We will prioritise countries not yet included in the Monument(al) Challenges Toolkit.
  • We will ensure geographical coverage and gender representation among the authors.
